Unfortunately, there’s not enough evidence that probiotics can prevent tummy bugs before they happen [8].

Both have a place in keeping tummy’s happier and healthier. Where possible, it’s always good to get what we need from food but when this isn’t always practical, a probiotic supplement is another way to get the beneficial live cultures. As parents, we can deal with our kids pooping more than once every couple of days, and we've never actually noted any increased frequency of bowel movements with probiotic consumption (but that's just our experience). Digestive Advantage is a probiotic for children aged 3-12 years containing a bacteria called BC30. There isn’t a great deal of published research to support its use and so it can’t be recommended.

We conducted hands-on tests of over a dozen different probiotic supplements, including tablets, capsules, gummies, and powders. We tested them in vitro (with dairy cultures), in ourselves, and with our own children. We were mainly interested in their ingredients, whether they tended to cause stomach upset, what combination of prebiotics and/or probiotics were used, how many colony forming units (CFUs) were present, and how they were encapsulated and released.

If you’re wondering if probiotic supplements or foods are better, the answer isn’t clear-cut. Getting nutrients from whole foods is usually best. But in the case of probiotics, your child may not be able to get enough from food alone. Probiotics in foods may not survive the manufacturing and storage processes. Unless you have a lab in your kitchen, there’s no way of knowing exactly how much made it out alive. Prebiotic and Probiotic Supplements. There are several excellent supplements available online, in several different forms. There are the traditional capsules (pills) that kids can swallow if they have an older or really brave kiddo. Even better for toddlers are the tiny pearls made by LoveBug Little Ones and Hyperbiotics in their PRO-Kids supplement, or the gummies made by Rainbow Light in their Probiolicious supplement. These pearls use the patented BIO-Tract technology (patent held by Nutraceutics) to protect probiotics from gastric acid during digestion. Rather than allowing the acids in your stomach to harm the probiotic's effectiveness, it provides a protective control layer to slowly time the release and maximize the number of live organisms reaching the stomach. Probiotics are measured in colony-forming units (CFU). The CFU shows how many viable bacteria are in each dose.Paid spokesperson for Culturelle ® products. Probiotics are usually found as gummies, powders, or chewable tablets. Some kids may prefer gummies, while powders may be more suitable for infants and younger children. Keep in mind that gummy supplements should be kept out of reach of children. Some of the best evidence we have available for probiotics is their role in helping to treat infectious Gastroenteritis [6]. Suitability for kids. Each supplement is suitable for children and includes specific strains that may offer health benefits for kids.

Some experts support the health benefits of raw milk and products made from raw milk, but it shouldn’t be given to children. Raw milk may contain dangerous bacteria. It can cause life-threatening illness. However, this does not seem to help all children and researchers are unsure why this is the case.As probiotics aren’t harmful, you could consider trying them to see if they help your little one.

Research has been carried out to see whether probiotics could help children with eczema [15], as some children with eczema have changes in their gut bacteria. However, unfortunately, there is little evidence that probiotics can help the skin condition. Probiotics are live cultures or ‘friendly bacteria’, naturally found in many foods or available as a supplement. Research has looked at how probiotics could help diarrhoea, caused by tummy bugs such as Gastroenteritis.
