Ella is flat broke: wasting away on bodega coffee, barely making rent, seducing the occasional strange man who might buy her dinner. Unexpectedly, an Upper East Side couple named Lonnie and James rescue her from her empty bank account, offering her a job as a nanny and ushering her into their moneyed world. Ella’s days are now spent tending to the baby in their elegant brownstone or on extravagant excursions with the family. Both women are just twenty-six—but unlike Ella, Lonnie has a doting husband and son, unmistakable artistic talent, and old family money. But conflict does come: The Korean War sends Brown and Hudner and their squadron to a carrier bound for the Mediterranean Sea. Their deployment requires the pilots to train on the F4U Corsair, an aircraft that worries Brown. The drilling on these planes becomes a tad repetitive mostly because the difficulties, even though Brown feels them, can be too technical for a general audience goer (though I’m sure aviation nuts will love these details). Soon after this, the community is funded to make the move to Australia to establish a new lutheran community. The six months on the ship out to Australia is gruelling and an event occurs that provides a real twist in the story. The book. Book. I know there's a movie. And I don't know why they decided to leave out so much of the stand-up-and-cheer details, but they did. So if you watched it, you might think you know the story, but you sadly don't. In my opinion, all of the critical elements that made this story so profound were not included or just changed. I was trying not to loose it at the theater, and then after, spent the next thirty minutes trying to right everything to my husband, who upon hearing how everything really happened, said that it was so much of a better story than what the movie portrayed. Hannah's second novel, The Good People was published in 2016 (ANZ) and 2017 (Feb, UK; Sept, North America). It was shortlisted for the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction, the Indie Book Award for Fiction and the ABIA Literary Fiction Book of the Year. It has been translated into 10 languages. This story covers Jesse being shot down in Korea and Tom crash landing his plane to try to help him rather than let the Chinese get him.I’m not sure I have the words to properly review this book. It’s not often I am brought to tears by a book but this… this was so achingly beautiful. It was mesmerising. Hannah Kent’s writing is so lyrical it is almost poetry. It is visceral and full of feeling and - I just don’t have the words. Honestly, the endings I created in my head were way more exciting, and probably made about as much sense. This book started out strong for me. It had a great premise- a weird, twisted relationship about a woman and her nanny. Their relationship was one of friendship, yet with a dark, obsession based theme that was fascinating.
