About this deal

API® POND PIMAFIX fish remedy contains an all-natural formula that rapidly treats fungal infections on the body and fins of your pond fish, in addition to treating internal and external bacterial infections. This product can be used in combination with POND MELAFIX™ fish remedy to enhance effectiveness against certain fish diseases. A better treatment for ich is to increase the temperature and addition of aquarium salts. Doses for this are out of scope for this article as it’s a complicated topic and each fish has its own unique needs. Can it be used for fin rot?

Fungus may appear as white, cottony tufts or patches on the mouth, skin, and fins of your fish, and should be treated as soon as possible once diagnosed. API® PIMAFIX™ fish remedy rapidly treats fungal infections, as well as internal and external bacterial infections, and provides a broad-spectrum treatment that prevents pathogens from developing resistance. It is safe for use even with delicate fish species, and may be used in conjunction with API® MELAFIX™ fish remedy to treat a broad range of infections.

How to use Melafix and Pimafix simultaneously

As we mentioned previously, dropsy is challenging to treat and next to impossible to cure. In fact, many fish keepers opt to euthanize their fish to avoid water contamination and the risk of disease outbreaks in the tank. API Melafix (anti-bacterial), Primafix (anti-fungal), and other API products such as conditioners can all be used in combination and in conjunction with each other.

API CO2 BOOSTER product breaks down chemically to supply carbon to plants within 24 hours, thus the reason for re-dosing every 24 hours. The organic compound slowly breaks down over the 24 hour period, allowing the plants to absorb what they need. Meanwhile, API LEAF ZONE plant fertilizer is stable in the water until the nutrients are utilized by the plants, allowing for a weekly dose. When dosing Pond AQUA ESSENTIAL we advise following the directions, but the product formulation does allow for a margin of error in the event a pond is accidentally dosed with slightly higher amount than specified. What should API ACTIVATED FILTER CARBON be placed in to use properly in a filter (i.e. are there empty filter bags that would be appropriate for this product?) You need to install an efficient filter system that can cope with the size of the fish tank and the nature of the fish you keep. For example, dirty fish species, such as goldfish, need a powerful filtration system to cope with the quantity of waste they produce. The option of just using salt is also just as effective as bettafix with less harm, but won’t be possible in a tank with snails or shrimp. What about crustaceans and mollusks and snails?

Normally, one dose will set the pH. However, some tap water sources used in freshwater aquariums are very hard or alkaline and are strongly buffered at pH 8.0 and higher. In this case, it may require two doses of API PROPER pH™ powder to overcome the natural buffers and set pH to a desirable level. In this situation, it may be advisable to soften the water first. Both Melafix and Pimafix, when used in the proper doses, are considered safe for use in aquariums with snails, bettas, shrimps, plants, and beneficial bacteria. However, they contain certain chemicals that aren’t safe for humans. So, don’t use them to treat fish meant for human consumption. Can Melafix And Pimafix Be Used Together? AQUA ESSENTIAL is designed to treat chloramines without the need to use a double dose.  For those customers who automatically double dose there is not a problem using AQUA ESSENTIAL for this, but it is not necessary. Yes, Melafix and Pimafix can be combined to treat stubborn or serious bacterial or fungal infections. Moreover, you can use them at the recommended doses, i.e., 5ml of each per 10-gallon of water. Final Thoughts

When treating for nitrite, a 5 mL/10 gal. dose of AQUA ESSENTIAL, you should expect a 15-30 ppm reduction in nitrite. High nitrate is harmful to fish, but is significantly less toxic than ammonia or nitrite. Effects of high nitrate levels are more gradual if parameters go untreated – fish will eventually lose their appetite and grow sluggish and inactive over time. High nitrate also contributes to rapid algae blooms in aquariums. Interestingly, the recommended dosage for both Pimafix and Melafix is the same- adding 5ml of the liquid to every 10-gallon of water for at least seven consecutive days. Once this period is over, change 25% of the water and continue with the same dose for another week or two if required.Melafix, which is pretty similar to Pimafix, is generally prepared from different species of tea trees, which is generally administered to freshwater and saltwater aquarium fish. It helps them fight off various gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial infections, which may cause: Keep adding Melafix and Pimafix daily until you no longer see any visible signs of the disease you are trying to treat. After every 7th day of dosage, you should also keep doing a 25% water change.

Will the required amount of API CO2 BOOSTER™ product vary based upon the number of plants in an aquarium? Human consumption of melafix should be avoided, and should not be used on any fish intended for human consumption. Human consumption of Melaleuca liquid has been shown to cause birth defects in humans and can be a harm.
