and experience goes into seed choice. We save as much of our own seed as possible, which means you can grow vast amounts, select colours and form and it has adapted to the conditions of the field and At Nell's joyous 21st birthday party her world falls apart when her father tells her she was adopted as a 4-year-old in 1913, seemingly abandoned on an Australian wharf and unable to remember her name. Many letters and maps were sent to Kew during the early days of its formation. The DC collection still has all these documents in Kew's archive.

On the eve of the First World War, a little girl is found abandoned after a gruelling ocean voyage from England to Australia. All she can remember of the journey is that a mysterious woman she calls the Authoress had promised to look after her. But the Authoress has vanished without a trace.

What is Kate Morton's latest book?

It has everything a good story needs a solid plot, an interesting and realistic characters. An unconventional setting really adds to the experience. A really great read. With a romance that gently simmers, a plot that flows as fast as the North Sea tides, and some gentle reminders of the need to protect our oceans, The House Beneath the Cliffs provides the perfect holiday getaway' Lancashire Post Maybe the ending was a little predictable but I certainly did not guess all the answers to the mysteries along the way.

Luisa, Cas, Harper, Max and Kath, along with many more are characters you come to know as though you have known them all your life and you will feel the joy and pain that they invariably experience as they each try to find what they need to fulfill their hopes and dreams. I'm sorry Kate Morton, I usually enjoy your books but after 21 hours of listening to this I feel slightly robbed of my time. I feel awful for this review, but hopefully it will direct readers towards her other books instead which are far superior in my view.one of the inspirations for her novel. Morton was also inspired by her own home, which sits on a Paddington hillside, and the mysterious Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall. All of these elements are woven throughout her story. [3] Reception [ edit ] We have owned and been growing, selling to shops, florists, markets, restaurants, weddings and individuals from this garden for several years on a small personal scale, having aquired The Forgotten I really liked the plot of this story, too – no pun intended. Creating a garden from scratch must be every gardeners’ dream, and watching the garden grow from a weedy tarmac rubble to a plot rich in fruit, vegetables and flowers was fascinating. The book centers on a young Australian woman named Cassandra (along with her grandmother, Nell O’Connor) whose life is turned upside down when she learns that they adopted her. She learns that they found her grandmother Nell alone on a wharf holding a suitcase and a book of fairytales. These are her only clues to her real identity. Cassandra learns that Nell had a secret house on England, and her curiosity urges her to move to find more about Nell. Right. I have come to the conclusion that Sharon Gosling is fast becoming one of my favourite writers. Having loved her previous books, I had high, possibly unrealistic, expectations of The Forgotten Garden and the author exceeded every single one.

Oh, this was such a delight to read! I didn't think a story about a family mystery could be so entertaining throughout, while still staying realistic and not going too over the top. Kirkus describes this novel as "weighty" and "at times unwieldy." The plot is described as "intricate" with "intersecting narratives" and "heavy-handed fairy-tale symbolism." [1] There are some lovely descriptions in this, especially of plants and gardening - which I always enjoy in fiction. And I think she writes 'community' really nicely - as in her previous novel, The Lighthouse Bookshop, it is indeed 'the friendships we made along the way' that are important in everyone's journeys in The Forgotten Garden. (The title made me think it would be about the rediscovering of an existing garden, btw, and it totally isn't, but whatever.) Harper has had to become an adult way before her time. She has to care for her younger brother Max whilst her father is an alcohol fuelled daze most of the time and at the same time try and keep up with her studies. She loves anything to do with cars and engines and it’s easy to tell there is a bright future ahead of her in this area. Nothing is specifically said about Max but I could tell from the way he was written and how Harper acted with him that he was someone who did have something that made him need to adhere to strict routines and regulations. He harbours a little secret which when it does come to the fore proved to be very heart-warming and pivotal to the overall plot. Harper loves him dearly and does her best for him but it’s not easy trying to balance school and home life when the responsibility for everything lies solely at your door. She is under enormous pressure and this came across in her gruff manner but underneath it all you can see that she does have a heart of gold. If given the chance like the flowers in the garden she would grow and flourish and turn into a wonderful person. Nell and Cassandra run an antique shop together. After Nell's passing, Cassandra's finds all kinds of secrets and is determined to get to the bottom of things. This brings Cassandra to England and a house that Nell had bought.

This is the first time I have read any of Sharon's books and I will be looking out for other stories to add to my collection as they give you that lovely feel good factor which we all need in our lives., Kate Morton drew on personal experiences as she wrote The Forgotten Garden. Morton's own grandmother, just like Nell, found out on her 21st birthday that she was not the biological daughter of her parents. It was a secret she kept until she confided in her three older daughters as an old woman, and this dark secret was
