The secondary characters – visible to us only within the limited viewpoint of young Offin and yet so well-sketched! You don’t just notice them, but you feel one with them because of the writing style. A special mention of Nana Mosi, Offin’s grandpa, who delights with his stories and his riddles. Nakamura, David (June 27, 2013). "Obamas visit Door of No Return, where slaves once left Africa". Washington Post . Retrieved June 27, 2013. It's 1860 in what is today Ghana. We meet Kofi who is part of the Asante Kingdom. He is 11 and loves his family, has a small crush on a girl and loves to swim. We learn about what life is for him as a young boy and what direction he will go as he grows older, but life doesn't always turn out the way we think it will. I will leave it at this point and urge you to try this book! Bestselling author Alexandra Christo, author of TikTok sensation To Kill a Kingdom, introduces her new book, The Night Hunt (Hot Key Books), a dark... The Door of No Return” tells of an inquisitive young boy named Kofi who loves his family, childhood friend and crush Ama, and most of all, swimming in the Offin River.

B. J. Ndiaye, Curator of Landmark in Slave Trade, Dies at 86". Agence France-Presse. The New York Times. 18 February 2009 . Retrieved 19 February 2009. I can understand why this book was hard for Alexander to write. There was a chapter dealing with the lower and upper Kwanta that reminded me of the moments leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus. I literally held my breath throughout the rest of the book. Even those who argue Gorée was never important in the slave trade view the island as an important memorial to a trade that was carried on in greater scale from ports in modern Ghana and Benin. [2] Tourism [ edit ] I found the ending quite abrupt, though it is not exactly a cliffhanger. An online search revealed that this is the first of a planned trilogy, something I didn’t know while requesting the book and isn’t mentioned on Netgalley or Goodreads. So I will not hold the ending against the book, still hoping that someone marks this as part of a planned series so that readers know what they are getting and that it’s somewhat incomplete.

On the fort's upper floors, above the bodies in chains, the governor and his soldiers prayed in a chapel.

Adam Goodheart, "The World; Slavery's Past, Paved Over Or Forgotten". New York Times, July 13, 2003. Many key emancipation anniversaries took place when the world commemorate the 150 anniversary of the emancipation proclamation in the US; 220 years since slaves were emancipated in Haiti; 180 years in Canada, the British West Indies and the Cape of Good Hope; 170 years in India; 165 years in France; 160 years in Argentina; 150 years in the Dutch colonies; and 125 years in Brazil. For the UN, scholars like Mr. Mazrui and many others, 2013 presented an opportunity both to celebrate and to refocus attention on arresting all forms of modern-day slavery.

The importance of staying true to your culture and traditions and passing on this knowledge down the generations.

About 150 of the castle's 1,000 inhabitants, of which 400 were women, lived in this dungeon, the only ventilation provided by a single porthole. In a Nutshell: I don’t have enough words to describe the beauty of this book. A middle-grade novel in verse, but will suit adult readers too. Deeply impactful, and highly disturbing and simply astounding. First of a planned trilogy. The title, “The Door of No Return”, that is both metaphorical and literal and suits the story so well.

This spellbinding novel by the author of The Crossover and Booked will take you on an unforgettable adventure that will open your eyes and break your heart. I’ve loved every book I have read by Alexander, but this one is my favorite. And to know there are two more to come in this trilogy makes me think about what I’ve just read even more. Wow!
