At the centre of the Skaven city lies the Great Temple of the Horned Rat. It stretches for miles beneath the surface but above ground is marked by a single, cloud-piercing tower reaching high over the desolation. [1b] Now, mix in a little bit of your Gorthor Brown into the Skavenblight Dinge, and add some scratches and highlights using this color, before finally using pure Gorthor Brown. With the pure Gorthor brown, focus mainly on areas that would see a lot of wear, rather than just highlighting with it. I also emphasized the seams slightly using these colors. A highlight for the clothes was built up with two thinned coats of Reaper Master Series Polished Bone [ Pallid Wych Flesh]. STEP 0 ALERT: I made things a lot harder than I had to with these. Airbrushing a fade, then masking off before doing the stonework would have been far, far easier, and I recommend you do the same. For the last color to add to the stone, I used VMA Medium Olive. I concentrated this color along the bottoms, under ledges, and near the vines, where moss would likely grow the most.

NOTE TO NON AIRBRUSH HAVERS: To replicate this without an airbrush, take a cheap craft brush, get a little bit more paint on it than you would drybrush, and stipple the mottling patterns onto the stone. Expect this to take longer than using an airbrush, and destroy your craft brush. A bit of messiness doesn’t matter all that much, as the wash and drybrush afterwards will cover up myriad sins. Skin: VGC Pale Flesh washed with Guilliman Flesh thinned with Lahmian Medium, extreme highlights with VMC Pale Sand (Less successful on this old metal model than on newer plastics) Paint the Red, Amber, Green traffic lights with Baal Red, Dorn Yellow and Warp Lightning, respectively.

Small dots of Warpaints Gun Metal [ Leadbelcher] were applied at the larger chinks in the armour. Highlight Colors: The first thing we can take away from all that is that leather is our color choice for highlights. As leather abrades it will expose areas where less dye has penetrated. In areas of high wear, working brown or even orange into your highlights gives your leather a lot of richness and a lived in feeling. GW's new range matches with the old range are the matches claimed by GW. However, many of the paints do not match very closely at all and some mixing will be required to get close to the original colours. If you are trying to match old GW with new GW, you'd be better just getting Vallejo game color or coat d'arms for the closest match )

Painting the Dumpsters

For decades they laboured until finally, in a grand ceremony in a specially excavated chamber beneath Skavenblight, the ratmen's sorcerers activated their sinister machine. They summoned forth the loose energy coursing beneath the earth, forcing it into their mad invention of iron and brass. The machine shuddered and smoked as more and more energy filled its coils.
