The danger is that the “more is better” mentality will take over, driven by the urge to compete on features rather than function. From “M.H.” (May 2016): “Longtime Sena user here. Had a pair of the very first SMH10’s (non USB), then upgraded to the USB version. Still have them, and they continue operate pretty good, even after 2 battery changes.

If you’re just getting into the Bluetooth motorcycle intercom scene, the 10S is the way to go. In fact, we’d even recommend it over our other all-time favorite, the Sena SMH5 (review). Riding a Ducati SBK wind noise and Akrapovic “music” can be a bit much sometimes. One thing I am looking into is getting fitted ear buds. Basically audiologist molded custom ear protection plugs with an integrated earbud. When you are a member of an active three-way conference intercom, you can completely terminate the conference intercom or just disconnect an intercom connection with one of your active intercom friends. The other can’t-miss feature is what I call the “Big Wheel” and what Sena calls the “Jog Dial”. The Jog Dial controls the intercom functions. The Jog Dial also rotates to — get this — raise and lower the volume! After reading all there is to read about headsets, I knew that it would have to be Bluetooth to dispense with the cables. webBikeWorld.com provided most of the sensible review material and customer comments. I eventually decided that it would be the Sena. With v 3.3 (and earlier) firmware, the SR10 would take full control of the SMH10, disconnecting the ongoing intercom connection. This was unacceptable. If I am not in an intercom connection, but listening to media via my smartphone, and a device connected to the SR10 actives (RADAR detection, GPS instruction, 2 way radio signal), the SMH10, drops the media connection, opens the channel for the SR10, for it to pass that data. I was floored, the darn thing has been flawless for two riding seasons and without any hesitation Tristan said “Sorry you got a bad one, we’ll make it right.” Now that is customer service! Interestingly, I didn’t have any real problems with the 3.3 upgrade on Vista. Now both Vista and my old XP aren’t working. The XP piece surprises me as they specifically have a XP option. From “M.W.” (06/2011):“Just for your info, I received my Sena SMH10 and any application on the iPhone that has sound will stream to the Sena, including GPS Nav I have on the iPhone. I really like this product. Much better than the Scala Tamset Pro.” A new metal helmet clamp was also designed for the 10S and it’s a brute; maybe too much so. At 127 grams with the intercom (4.5 oz.), the 10S with mount is heavy.

It's a universal system, but we are not able to guarantee that it will fit all Shark helmets, apologies.

SMH5-FM

To reject a call, press the Jog Dial for 2 seconds until you hear a beep while the phone is ringing. VOX: A similar method is used to enable the VOX system on the SMH10. Note that VOX is only available between two systems if all four are paired; if you think about it, there would be some difficulty in using voice to call the other headsets.

Search for Bluetooth devices on the GPS navigation screen. Select the Sena SMH10 in the list of the devices detected on the GPS. I had a Sena SMH5 (review) that worked great, but then bit the dust after a month. Decided to return unit to RevZilla and get the (SMH)10. Great unit and I am assured that while some units fail of all manufacturers, this was an anomaly.

Frequently Asked Questions

In other words, if I’m in intercom conversation with another SMH10 user, and my RADAR detector activates (which is audio connected to the SR10), that audio is “mixed” into the current ongoing intercom connection to the SMH10. This allows me to pass along that info to the other rider(s) immediately. I use it for music and phone calls only so far. I ride with a GMax GM68S full face helmet (review)on my head and an iPhone3GS (iOS4) in my bag. Recent firmware updates have also provided the SMH-10 with the Sena “Universal Intercom” ability to connect with other brands of Bluetooth intercoms.

As same in the case of three-way intercom, you can completely get out of the four-way conference intercom or just disconnect a single intercom connection. The headset and the module are mostly finished in a matte rubberized water-resistant surface treatment. The glossy part of the module is a translucent cover that hides the LED indicator light. The glossy plastic can get scratched, but it may be possible to polish it if necessary. Version 3.0.0 of the Sena SMH10 User’s Guide reflects the same general care and attention put into the V4 release. Big sections of the manual have been rewritten and layouts modified to provide a very comprehensive and very useful reference publication that is still small enough to carry with you. The tables, diagrams and case studies are by themselves descriptive enough to let most users navigate through the SMH10 successfully. Sena SMH10 Version 4 Firmware Update Volume Decrease Issue UPDATE from “M.H.” (April 2012):“Did a lot of experimentation yesterday with the new v4 firmware for the SMH10. Sena got it right this time. Here is what I discovered: Only in heavy cross winds was the defective speaker really missed because of all the helmet noise. I highly recommend the SMH10, for both the quality of the audio and the quality of the customer service. The ease of installation is just a bonus.”Sena has a Bluetooth terminal app which is for geekier pursuits than what we are trying to do but I have no doubt that between headset firmware updates and a phone app sharing audio is very possible.” The other thing is that it is not easy to adjust the volume so I tended to set it too loud by default. I tolerated this for a while. One day, I was going somewhere new and I tried using my mobile phone Satnav as an audio aid only. That worked very well. I made the decision that I would find the best solution to listening whilst riding. The 10S intercom module is weather-resistant, but not waterproof, which means it should be fine for rain use but not total immersion.
