About this deal

NVIDIA’s new Quadro P2000 professional graphics card fits nicely alongside the other mid/lower range models of the impressive line. This low-profile form factor performed as expected under our workloads, successfully leveraging its 1024 CUDA core Pascal GPU and 5GB GDDR5 of on-board memory. Though its footprint is not as small as other cards from the new Quadro line, the P2000 is still smaller than most cards boasting the same specifications, making it an ideal high-performance solution for professionals with compact workstations. Nvidia continues to make huge strides in GPU performance. The Quadro P2000, for example, boasts 66% more peak single precision compute performance and 32% more peak memory bandwidth than the Quadro M2000, which only came to market nine months ago.

Like all graphic cards from this line, the P2000 is based on the Pascal GPU architecture. It also features 1024 CUDA Cores, 5GB GDDR5 memory, and the ability to support up to four 5K (5120 x 2880 at 60Hz) displays natively. The Quadro P2000 measures in at 4.4” H x 7.9” L and uses a single slot via the PCI Express 3.0 x16 interface. It features the line’s usual 4x mini-DisplayPorts and supports HDMI and VGA connections through adaptors. For another change of application, we looked at a beta of a new VR-capable CAD file viewer called PiXYZ Review. Here, we managed to get decent performance even with a 13 million triangle factory model, although the default render quality was not as good as in VRED.

The higher-end ‘Pascal’ GPUs – the Quadro P4000, Quadro P5000, and Quadro P6000 – showed no discernible benefit over the Quadro P2000 in shaded with edges mode. While we didn’t test the lower-end Pascal Quadro GPUs, we would expect to see similar flat results, particularly with the Quadro P1000. On paper, this low-profile GPU, which fits standard desktop and Small Form Factor (SFF) workstations, looks to be a good choice for those looking to use mainstream CAD tools simply for modelling. Iray is also embedded inside several applications including SolidWorks Visualize, Siemens NX Ray Traced Studio, Catia Live rendering and Lumiscaphe. Chaos Group also offers a GPU-accelerated version of its popular physically-based renderer, V-Ray, called V-Ray RT, which plugs into Revit, Rhino, SketchUp, 3ds Max and others. Quadro GPUs can also be used to accelerate the OpenCL-based Radeon Pro Render from AMD. HTC Vive: Getting up and running Our experience of working with HTC Vive and how to avoid common mistakes Nvidia continues to make huge strides in GPU performance. Release 378 is a Quadro New Feature (QNF) driver. This driver is from the most recent driver release branch from NVIDIA, and contains the latest new features and functionality. It has been tested for workstation environments, and is recommended only for those users who need specific features mentioned in the release highlights or release notes. NVIDIA Quadro Sync and Quadro Sync II users are advised to use the latest driver from the R375 ODE branch. The Quadro P4000 delivered a smooth VR experience in all our architecturally-focused VR applications using a variety of test models. We also had no problems with Gravity Sketch, but this came as little surprise considering the relatively simple datasets produced by this conceptual design tool. Looking at drawtime, the P2000 measured in at 6.492 seconds, which was just slightly higher than the older generation M2000 (which posted 6.262 seconds). The P1000 recorded a moderately better score of 6.412 seconds. In average FPS, the P2000 posted an average of 460.94 FPS, while showing a minimum FPS of 202.78. This was noticeably better than the P1000, which posted an average of 342.25 FPS and minimum FPS of 187.16 FPS. The M2000 had significantly lower results with 273.51 FPS and 160.51 FPS, respectively. ESRI Benchmark While the Quadro P2000 is still considered a 3D CAD card at heart, the potential performance increases in CPU limited SolidWorks and Revit workflows, are unlikely to get your average CAD modeller begging for an upgrade. Why buy a Ferrari if you’re only allowed to drive it on London’s M25?We would expect this lead to grow when viewing models on a 4K resolution display, as this would put an even bigger load on the GPU. We tested the Quadro P4000 with a variety of automotive styling models in VR, with and without Anti-Aliasing enabled. It is important to note here that anti-aliasing is really important for automotive styling, as it smooths all the jagged edges in the model. And, despite the moderate resolution of the HTC Vive (which means you can still discern pixels) it still makes a huge difference to the quality of the model in VR. When modelling in SolidWorks, the most popular way to view CAD models is in shaded with edges mode. Using the SPECapc for SolidWorks 2015 benchmark we saw a small but significant improvement, generation on generation in this display style. The ‘Pascal’ Quadro P2000 was 15% faster than the ‘Maxwell’ Quadro M2000 and 26% faster than the ‘Kepler’ Quadro K2200. Supported technological solutions. This information will prove useful if you need some particular technology for your purposes. VR Ready

We previously reviewed the NVIDIA Quadro P1000 and P4000 GPUs, and though they certainly aren’t nearly as powerful as the company’s highest-end workstation GPUs, both of these cards performed well enough to suit most general professional use cases–and at a very affordable to boot. The P2000 offers much of the same, lying somewhere in between those two cards in the performance spectrum. Touted as the perfect balance of performance and features, this compact form factor GPU offers the power needed for creative professionals who work with intensive 3D applications.
