This map, published by Simeon Netchev for the World History Encyclopedia, depicts the expansion and heyday of the First French Empire in 1812, with Napoleon Bonaparte at its head. Largest urban areas of France : The 5 largest urban areas of France are (population of urban areas in 2006) : In 2014, the French parliament passed a law reducing the number of metropolitan regions from 22 to 13 effective 1 January 2016. [5]

The warm-summer mediterranean climate ( Csb) is found in the northwestern part of Brittany and along the Gulf of Lion but higher in altitude, in the mountains. Summers are warm (but not hot) and dry, winters are cool and can be cold in the mountains, with rainy autumns.Metropolitan France has two shorelines, one at the North Atlantic Ocean, the other at the Mediterranean Sea; it sums up to a total of 3,427 km of coastline.

Before the French Revolution of 1789, France was divided into provinces from the historical feudal history. Some of these regions roughly correspond to the current regions. The region that now comprises France consisted of open grassland during the Pleistocene Ice Age. France gradually became forested as the glaciers retreated starting in 10,000 BC, but clearing of these primeval forests began in Neolithic times. These forests were still fairly extensive until the medieval era. One overseas "country" ( pays d'outre-mer, or POM): French Polynesia. In 2003 it became an overseas collectivity (or COM). Its statutory law of 27 February 2004 gives it the particular designation of overseas country inside the Republic (or POM), but without legal modification of its status. Saint Pierre and Miquelon (located just south of Newfoundland, Canada, in North America), once an overseas department, was demoted to a territorial collectivity in 1985.The Napoleonic Wars continued until 1815 when Napoleon was defeated and exiled, leading to the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy. Subdivisions of the Kingdom of France Map of the provinces of France in their final form in 1789, shortly before they were abolished the following year. Largely flat Artois and Flanders include some of the most heavily industrialized parts of the country. However, there are many good reasons to explore the area, not least its strong associations with the most devastating battles of World War I, which recently marked its hundredth anniversary. Other big draws as you can see in the map of Northern France are the bustling port town of Calais, Dunkerque university atmosphere and poignant war memorials, and the delightful village of Cassel,a rare example of a Flemish hill settlement. St-Omer, Le Touquet and Montreuil-sur-Mer are strong contenders in terms of charm and interest and the castle at Pierrefonds would make Walt Disney proud. About two-thirds of the county's interior (in north and west) consists of plains or gently rolling hills, within the plains there are two major basins: the Paris basin in the northwest, drained by the river Seine, and the Aquitaine basin in the southwest, emptied by the Garonne river. The plains are interspersed with highlands here and there.

This is a list of the extreme points of France; the points that are farther north, south, east or west than any other location.Around 125 BC, the south of Gaul was conquered by the Romans, who called this region Provincia Nostra ("Our Province"), which over time evolved into the name Provence in French. [34] Julius Caesar conquered the remainder of Gaul and overcame a revolt carried out by the Gallic chieftain Vercingetorix in 52 BC. [35] Gaul was divided by Augustus into Roman provinces. [36] Many cities were founded during the Gallo-Roman period, including Lugdunum (present-day Lyon), which is considered the capital of the Gauls. [36]
