About this deal

TopSpec Linseed Mash is designed to be fed with any TopSpec feed balancer or an appropriate TopSpec supplement as it does not contain any added vitamins or trace-elements. This combination can be mixed with any other horse feed including alfalfa/grass chops. One of the ways in which TopSpec Linseed Mash is superior to most straights, however, is that it is supplemented with the major minerals calcium, sodium and magnesium. The fatty acids in cell membranes can be released and transformed into chemical messengers such as prostaglandins and thromboxanes. If micronized linseed is fed in larger amounts to horses then because it is high in oil it will provide a higher level of energy (calories) and so is useful for promoting weight gain. Oil is a source of slow release energy and so shouldn’t result in over-excitable behaviour.

The typical ingredients in TopSpec Linseed Mash are soya hulls (GM), full fat linseed, linseed expeller, unmolassed beet pulp, grass, high fibre oat-by product, micronised flaked maize, oat bran flakes, wheatbran, molasses, micronised flaked peas, wheatfeed, mineral premix. TopSpec Linseed Mash is a blend of conditioning ingredients, with an emphasis on linseed providing substantial levels of oil and protein and including the all-important muco-polysaccharides. Oatbran provides good levels of super-fibres and has been proven to be sympathetic to the horse's digestive system. The Mash is rich in linseed and oat bran and it contains just 12% starch yet the scattering of flaked maize and flaked peas lends a mix-like appearance to this flavoursome mash.

Essential fatty acids include chains of carbon atoms joined together; long chains contain 12 or more carbon atoms. Linseed is often grouped with other “oilseeds” such as rape which is a brassica and soya which is a legume. Although from different plant families, all produce seeds from which useful “vegetable” oils can be extracted; linseed oil benefits include good levels of omega 3 fatty acids in a concentrated form which produces exceptional coat shine. In the case of both linseed and soya, the whole seed or bean can be micronized which is a form of cooking that makes them more digestible for the horse. Soya is often flaked and used in mixes to provide a high oil feed ingredient and both linseed and soya can be ground to produce a meal which is often included in cubes. Linseed meal is also a popular straight feed that can be added to the feed separately. Contains the all-important muco-polysaccharides. Oatbran provides good levels of super-fibres and has been proven to be sympathetic to the horse’s digestive system. I would put them both on Alfa A Oil (don't worry, this is safe for EMS horses!), and some linseed oil as an additive. No more than 90ml of the linseed oil initially. For the horse who needs more weight, you could add some micronised linseed when they drop weight - but again, this needs to be calculated on weight. If you need a joint supplement the only one that is actually proven to work and peer reviewed by vets is Naf Superflex Senior. All of this is safe for EMS horses or those prone to laminitis. I promise - I have fed this for years to such horses. This combination can be mixed with any other horse feed including alfalfa/grass chops.
