The genre has been around for ages (arguably, Mary Shelley was writing it in the 1820s, although the end of the world is really a universal concept), but the last few decades of post-apocalyptic media often had a fantastical edge. Zombies are a perennial favorite, with The Walking Dead exemplifying a kind of survivalist fantasy for doomsday preppers.Wolfman said when he pitched the series to DC, he realized it was going to be a completely new beginning for the DCU. [18] "I knew up front, and they did too, how big this was going to be," he said. "But, no-one knew how well it would sell, or whether it would sell at all. It was a risk DC was willing to take, because my thoughts were that DC needed a lot of help at that time, and they did too." [19] Wolfman also said he saw it as an attempt to improve DC's reputation for storytelling. Many readers at the time saw them as old-fashioned. [20]

Crisis on Infinite Earths" is a 1985–1986 American comic book crossover storyline published by DC Comics. The series, written by Marv Wolfman and pencilled by George Pérez, was first serialized as a 12-issue limited series from April 1985 to March 1986. As the main piece of a crossover event, some plot elements were featured in tie-in issues of other publications. Since its initial publication, the series has been reprinted in various formats and editions. It's the end of the universe. There's entropy all over the place, that has already eaten everything left in reality, except for one (1) colony ship from Earth. Only 2,000 people left aboard, the entropy being kept at bay by something called a Pseudoreality Field projected round the ship. It's never really explained how this works (or I have missed it), and to be honest, I only understood the function of the Field in the last issue.. Grobar, Matt (May 18, 2021). It feels like there isn't enough time given to establish the setting and its unique situation, making what follows less impactful than it probably should've been. This story could've done with a slower build-up of dread, but I'm not sure you can afford to do that in a single issue series.

Elements to set up Crisis on Infinite Earths were put in DC's comics years before the crossover took place; [29] an example of this was the Monitor's appearance in The New Teen Titans. [15] In a January 3, 1983 memo, Giordano, Wolfman, and Len Wein instructed editors and writers to use the Monitor twice in the coming year but not to show him: "Because this series involves the entire DC Universe we do ask that each Editor and writer cooperate with the project by using a character called The Monitor in their books twice during the next year". This served to set up the series. [2] [15] When Wolfman and Giordano reiterated this in a 1984 meeting, some editors were not pleased; one was so miffed he did not speak for the rest of the meeting.
