Though it was built in the early 1800s, novelist Sir Walter Scott did his best to give his manor near Melrose as archly medieval a feeling as he could. With its recent refurb, Abbotsford draws increasing visitors to the world of the romantic Scottish novelist. Dr Fowler welcomes the discussions that the removal of Colston’s statue has triggered – they’re the kind of honest, open and sometimes difficult conversations that Colonial Countryside is stimulating: “It is vital we have this conversation now – we’re very familiar with the history of the Tudors and the World Wars, but there is a gap in our collective knowledge of 400 years of colonial history and its role in shaping modern Britain.”

As the bringing down of Colston’s statue shows, ignorance of Britain’s past is far from bliss, and as XazQ so eloquently puts it, harms our future. “Colonial Countryside has made me realise that our present is based on our past, and our present will shape our future. The British Empire has made Great Britain the way it is today – if we carry on not talking about it, we would be taking history for granted and future generations won’t know about it, and that makes our future bleaker,” she says.Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence list (please be aware that we charge by the day not by the night, and prices include day or arrival and day of departure). please refer to the 2024booking form and read carefully for any up to date changes -any changes to the below will always be able on the 2024booking form The countryside holds a sacred place in Britain’s imagination – thatched cottages, resplendent country manors, imposing castles, ye olde worlde churches, sweeping pastures, wildflower meadows, gently ambling waterways and gardens in bloom are part of the nation’s fairytale, representing an Arcadia unsullied by cities, modernity, migration and globalisation. Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score, we add up all the review scores and divide that total by the number of review scores we received. Guests can also give separate subscores in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free WiFi. Guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently – there’s no direct link between them. Here is the in-town equivalent of the country manor. In the north Wales walled town of Conwy, Plas Mawr (“Great Hall”) is the finest surviving Elizabethan townhouse in Britain. Built for a wealthy Welsh merchant, the home is noted for its ornamental plasterwork and rich furnishings and décor. The birthplace and family home of Sir Isaac Newton near Grantham, Woolsthorpe is furnished as it would have been in the 17th century. The apple tree in the garden that inspired his reflections on gravity is reputed to be original. This is a great period manor visit, conveniently located just off the A1. But there's plenty more besides fine dining to enjoy during a stay in Beaulieu. You'll be just a short drive from Exbury Gardens, with their lovely landscaped herbaceous, woodland, and wildflower gardens, which you can ride through on a narrow-gauge steam railway. Also nearby is the famous Beaulieu National Motor Museum, where you can see a collection of over 280 vehicles and motoring memorabilia, including legendary Formula One cars. When you've finished exploring, you'll want to make a beeline for the hotel's swish spa, where there's a huge range of products and therapies to indulge in, along with an outdoor pool, sauna, hot tub, and lounge area. An excellent dinner awaits in the evening at the Talbooth Restaurant, which sits on the banks of the peaceful River Stour and was awarded 3 AA Rosettes in 2019.
