About this deal

On the extreme end of both ends of the spectrum, you have outliers that cater to more specialty applications. Featherweight base layers are almost exclusively used for distance runners in need of something to keep off late year chill and biting winds, but still keep them dry and unencumbered. Lightweight thermal underwear as a rule will always be more effective at keeping you cool and dry than anything heavy. Midweight long johns tend to be a bit more limited by both hard work and warm temperatures, but they aren’t totally out of the question for more mild activities like snowshoeing or alpine skiing when the weather is a little colder. Since REI updated the Midweight Bottoms, there are even fewer attributes we can point to as weaknesses. This no-nonsense piece of gear gets the job done well enough and isn't looking to collect accolades. The performance is really hard to beat, considering the price. If you're in the market for a warmer layer, and maybe a softer and comfier one at that, it would be time to reach for a wool option like the Smartwool Classic Thermal Merino Bottom and leave these for a milder day. In many ways Merino is the highest quality option, tending to really drive the price up–it has the unfortunate consequence of also being among the least durable of the fabrics.

If ever something was made for winter, it was thermals. If the thought of stepping outside fills you with dread, even when you’re wearing a coat, thermals are the answer. Put them on over your underwear, and then layer your clothes on top for a day filled with warmth, comfort and joy. A sound sleep Silk is a little anachronistic compared to some of the flashy and fine tuned options that you see on this list, but it still has the advantage of being just about the most comfortable next-to-skin layer you can find. It’s also reasonably warm and odor-resistant. But that’s where most of the appeal stops- outside of use as a sleep layer there are much more practical and affordable options in synthetics. Pros For the price, they are a great option. They’d be warm enough for more stationary activities in cold weather, or if you’re looking to buy some layers for kids bound to tear things up or outgrow them, these will save you some money. Overall, the comfort and fit are decent, but I wish the waist stayed in place a bit better while hiking. What to Consider When Choosing Long Johns

As is the case with any piece of insulative clothing, exertion has a massive impact on internal temperature during use. In the case of thermal underwear and thermal base layer as a whole, it’s no stretch to say “you get out of it what you put into it.” Extreme cold demands heavyweight base layers. The natural loft of merino wool traps air very efficiently, making it warmer than synthetics of equal weight. While synthetics may dry faster, merino is warmer and more comfortable when it does get wet.

Heat Holders men's thermal underwear is sure to keep you warm on even the coldest days. We believe that whatever you’re doing, inside or out, you should feel comfortable and content so you can enjoy life to the full. No-fly design could be inconvenient underneath other layers, fit may be too tight for some body types, pricey They’ll also hold up to extended wear and the occasional snag much better than lightweight options. HeavyweightLong johns and base layer bottoms are generally only used when a shirt or top isn’t enough to get the job done. As such, warmth may be one of the factors that you want to highlight, as opposed to emphasizing breathability or moisture regulation. Both fabric weight and material are going to impact the warmth of your thermal underwear. Aside from the overall warmth and the value of getting a 100% Merino wool bottom at a steal of a price, there is not a whole lot about these bottoms that makes them stand out among the competition. But that's their charm: they're working behind the scenes (or underneath your pants) to ensure you stay comfortable in the cold without needing any more fanfare. We should note there may be a wash-in period to get the ultra-fine Merino wool to soften up a smidge. So if you find the Merino 250 Bottom is somewhat itchy when you first wear them, wash them before bestowing your final judgment. If you'd rather go with a comfier option, we like the feel of the Artilect Boulder 125, which blends wool and stretchy nylon. Designed to keep you warm in the coldest conditions, this is a versatile pair of Merino wool bottoms
