After deciding on a basket of bath items he discovers a large selection, so not knowing what Penny will get him, he buys the entire range to cover all contingencies. Penny's gift to Sheldon is a napkin both autographed and used byLeonard Nimoy. Sheldon, overwhelmed since he now possesses Nimoy'sDNA and cangrowhis own Leonard Nimoy, gives Penny all the gift baskets and also a rare "Sheldon" hug. Sheldon undergoes obsessive preparation to exchange Christmas presents with Penny, whose Christmas gift to Sheldon goes beyond Sheldon's wildest dreams. Penny starts dating a handsome physicist. Sheldon: In the pre-Christian era, as the winter solstice approached and the plants died, pagans brought evergreen boughs into their homes as an act of sympathetic magic, intended to guard the life essences of the plants until spring. This custom was later appropriated by Northern Europeans and eventually it becomes the so-called Christmas tree. First episode with a plot with most scenes where Sheldon and Bernadette are the only main characters that appear. Bernadette and Sheldon arrive at the mall in search of a gift to ruin Amy's Christmas. Bernadette says Howard's best gifts were inspired by what Howard knew about her. Sheldon knows Amy likes Chaucer, medieval literature and old French movies, and he likes the way her fingers dance around whenever she hears harp music. Sheldon admits he really does love Amy - and wants to find a gift to make her feel small and worthless. In Amy's apartment, Dr. Koothrappali wins the ball of wool game. When Dr. Koothrappali remembers the theme parties his wife used to throw, Penny suggests that's where Raj gets his interest in being a host.

After the Christmas holiday, Sheldon and Amy tell Leonard and Penny about their visit to his mother Mary, who upset Sheldon by confessing she never thought he would find a partner. Sheldon reacted by acting anti-socially and getting his ear pierced. Also, Leonard and Penny had a series of mishaps chopping down a Christmas tree and bringing it home, while Bernadette and Howard have been struggling to cope with a constantly screaming baby. Eventually, Bernadette does resolve the problem by climbing into Halley’s crib and sleeping with her. Howard seemingly contradicts the original history where Leonard met Howard and Raj together at Caltech and not Howard first as depicted in " The Staircase Implementation" (S3E22). In " The Santa Simulation", Sheldon is haunted by memories of Christmas past during a festive game of Dungeons and Dragons, while Raj joins the girls for ladies' night.In the tag scene, Santa ( Dakin Matthews) visits Sheldon in his apartment and apologizes to him for being unable to revive Pop-Pop, but then surprises him by firing a cannon at him in revenge for being left to be eaten by ogres. Sheldon wakes up from his nightmare. This episode marks the first scientific collaboration between Leonard and Howard at Caltech, showcasing the former's expertise in astroparticle physics and the latter's expertise in astronomical instrumentation. Together, they built a Multi-wire chamber|multiwire proportional counter for detecting Cosmic ray|cosmic particles. Leonard marvels at how their multiwire-type detector can replace an entire Cherenkov Telescope Array|array of giant IACT|Cherenkov telescopes. The scene where she takes her glasses off and says to Leonard "I am the one who’s getting a divorce, Mitzy is the one who is dead. Why are you the one making a fuss?" before Leonard leaves the sitting room and asks Penny a question about what is new in her life before Penny answers "Nothing. Not a damn thing" and shakes her head. Leonard has a Sideshow Collectibles Aragorn Legendary Scale Bust with the shattered Narsil in his room. Likewise, Sheldon has a Sideshow Collectibles Legolas Legendary Scale Bust with iconic dual long knives in his bedroom, clearly seen in " The Plimpton Stimulation" (S3E21).

There are a few scenes in this episode where Beverly is seen with her glasses off (whereas she wears sunglasses in the car scene at the end of this episode): Leonard and Howard are in the university clean room, finishing up after their experiment and getting ready to attend Amy's Christmas dinner when a bird flies in. Howard doesn't want to call building facilities as they will get blamed. In Amy's apartment, Amy and Penny are chatting with Raj and his dad, who has nothing good to say about marriage or his ex-wife. Leonard and Howard call for Raj's help in dealing with the avian intruder. Elsewhere, Bernadette is driving Sheldon to the mall so he can find a present for Amy. Resentful at being made to celebrate Christmas, Sheldon wants to buy a Christmas gift for Amy as they agreed not to buy gifts and she won't have a present for him, ruining her Christmas.This is the second episode where Leonard, Raj, and Howard are seen wearing white hazard suits. The first being " The Engagement Reaction" (S04E23).
