Bamboo Salt is a common ingredient in a lot of Korean Toothpastes. This stems from the age-old practice of Koreans brushing their teeth with salt to keep them clean, act as a natural bleach as well as a natural disinfectant. Nowadays, dentistry has evolved from a practice-based medical discipline to an evidence-based one. A substantial number of herbal extracts have been incorporated into oral hygiene products such as toothpaste or mouthwash, due to their proposed antimicrobial effects. Although the antimicrobial efficacy of some of them have already been demonstrated in clinical studies, evidence regarding this issue remains limited [ 35– 37]. As a health professional, it is important to be open minded and constantly learn about new technology that is constantly evolving. Nano hydroxyapatite has been used for many years in other parts of the world, and shown so many benefits from biocompatibility, relief in sensitivity, and its benefits in remineralization; restoring mineral dentistry and smoothness. I believe offering options to patients is essential when research shows its benefits. Co-application of brushing with toothpaste containing certain chemical agents helps remove pathogenic biofilm and reduces bacterial repopulation on the enamel. Toothbrushing is associated with a decrease in oral bacterial levels and maintenance of a healthy balance of oral flora on tooth surfaces [ 10]. Typically, conventional toothpaste types contain triclosan and fluoride as main antibacterial ingredients. It has been proven that these ingredients have anti-cariogenic properties [ 11]. In recent years, there has been an increased interest in therapeutic herbal ingredients worldwide, due to reduced side effects and better availability, leading to the popularity of herbal toothpastes. With the increasing availability of herbal toothpaste brands on the market, the efficacy of these products on oral bacteria has been studied extensively in recent years [ 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18].

Furthermore, due to the competitive nature of the industry, many leading brands of Korean toothpaste feature innovative formulas for improved dental protection. Often times this will include the use of clinically proven ingredients like xylitol to reduce cavity-causing bacteria and promote healthy teeth. The bottom line is that when shopping for a quality Korean toothpaste it’s important to make sure that it offers plenty of fluoride. When it comes to toothpaste, finding something with fluoride is essential for preventing cavities and other oral health issues. Fluoride works by making teeth stronger and harder, and it helps to reduce the amount of acid that can lead to tooth decay. Without it, toothpaste would simply act as something that helps to remove the build-up of plaque and maybe freshen the breath.

Due to the comparable efficacy of the investigated herbal toothpaste with conventional toothpaste, it potentially qualifies as a complementary agent for self-care oral hygiene procedures. I've been a dentist for 16 years and this is the only brand of fluoride-free toothpaste alternative that I recommend to my patients. The anti-gingivitis effect of Bamboo salt was further confirmed in a randomized controlled clinical trial comparing a Bamboo salt toothpaste with another herbal toothpaste containing Centella Asiatica [ 34].
