I'm sorry, but I have to go to the doctor's. I don't know if you've heard the details, but I--I had quite an experience. I'm sure I can see you Tuesday, though--that is, if you can take the case." For the reader (listener, in my case), a verdict lies just over the horizon. But I discovered I did not need this reassurance to keep going. The author, writing in the first person, presents Biegler as unassuming, self-effacing, good humoured and eminently likeable (unlike, it must be said, the man he defends). Coming each lunchtime to my precious listening slot, I was always pleased to be reminded of my current book. Krajicek, David J. (January 17, 2009). Daley, [18] and his police commissioner. As a result, the film was temporarily banned in the heavily Catholic city. [25] Preminger filed a motion in federal court in Illinois and the mayor's decision was overturned. The film was allowed to be exhibited after the court determined that the clinical language during the trial was realistic and appropriate within the film's context. [26] [27] Variety claimed that the film contained words never before heard in American films with the Motion Picture Production Code seal such as "contraceptive", (sexual) " climax" and " spermatogenesis". About the Author(s) of Anatomy of a Murder

After law school, Voelker returned home to work for the law firm of Eldredge & Eldredge in Marquette. [11] He also worked as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Marquette County, Michigan. After two years apart from Grace, [7] he moved to Chicago. [12] After their marriage, he practiced law with the firm of Meyer, Austrian & Platt. They lived in Chicago for three years before he returned to Michigan. [8] The few jobs Voelker got in a rural area in the middle of the Great Depression barely kept them solvent. [7] The film examines the apparent fallibility of the human factor in jurisprudence. [21] [22] In various ways all of the human components—the counsel for defense and prosecution, the defendant and his wife, and the witnesses—have their own differing positions on what is right or wrong, and varying perspectives on integrity, justice, morality and ethics. The reliance on credibility of witnesses, and the "finding of facts" based upon those determinations, is the " Achilles heel" of the judicial process. [22] The author, John D. Voelker, using the pen name Robert Traver, wrote this novel shortly after being defeated in his bid for re-election for district attorney of Marquette County, MI and deciding to focus on his private law practice. This novel is based on his first big case on the “flipside” of the law as defense counsel instead of prosecutor and centered on an Army lieutenant accused of murdering a well-known local innkeeper for allegedly raping his wife. Voelker employed a little-known defense tactic in his pursuit to free his client.

The mine whistles were tooting midnight as I drove down Main Street hill. It was a warm moonlit Sunday night in mid-August and I was arriving home from a long weekend of trout fishing in the Oxbow Lake district with my old hermit friend Danny McGinnis, who lives there all year round. I swung over on Hematite Street to look at my mother's house--the same gaunt white frame house on the corner where I was born. As my car turned the corner the headlights swept the rows of tall drooping elms planted by my father when he was a young man--much younger than I--and gleamed bluely on the darkened windows. My mother Belle was still away visiting my married sister and she had enjoined me to keep an eye on the place. Well, I had looked and lo! like the flag, the old house was still there.
