About this deal

For starters, the RTX 3080 Ti has 2GB more GDDR6x memory than the regular RTX 3080. GDDR6x is one of the most expensive and top-performing types of video memory used in consumer graphics cards. Its key benefit is that it can facilitate significantly faster data transfer speeds than the base GDDR6 seen in cheaper graphics cards. In testing, games generally didn't have major problems, with memory temperatures peaking at anywhere from 94C–104C. The higher end of that range is a concern, however, as we're dealing with a brand-new card. How will it perform after a year or two of use? We've been there, countless times, and the answer will inevitably be higher temperatures and fan speeds over time. In this review, we test the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Gaming OC. The card is tweaked a small notch and has been designed with a custom PCB and that traditional WindForce cooler. Gigabyte as well offers a dual BIOS mode for silent and performance cooling, yet with the very same performance.

As we stated earlier, it's not the GPU thermals alone that are important. We've seen numerous instances over the past nine months where cards with GDDR6X run hot on the memory. Fresh from the box hardware represents the best-case scenario for the hardware, outside of modding the card yourself. If the RTX 3080 Ti already hits peak temperatures of 104C on the memory in some games, we expect that to get worse over time. HDMI 2.1 is a cutting-edge input that facilitates key features such as better HDR performance (high dynamic range), increased memory bandwidth and, most important, 120Hz/4K gaming. The rather questionable results in certain AMD promoted games — particularly Assassin's Creed Valhalla— become even more apparent. That game either really loves AMD's Infinity Cache, or contains heavy AMD optimizations, or both, as its 45% lead for the 6900 XT over the 3080 Ti is an extreme outlier. The Infinity Cache definitely helps at 1080p more than higher resolutions, however, and AMD's cards have a strong showing in general. Of course, everything from the RX 6800 and up averages more than 144 fps in our test suite at 1080p, which frankly should satisfy all but the most demanding esports competitors. GeForce RTX 3080 Ti: Ray Tracing and DLSS Gaming Performance The one we are still in love with is Nvidia Broadcast, which is ostensibly designed for streamers and content creators, but we find that it is incredibly useful in just day-to-day life. We use it a lot when we’re taking meetings, or even just hanging out with friends in Discord, especially because it filters out most of the New York City street noises outside our street-facing apartment window. The RTX 3080 Ti is the same size as the RTX 3080, so it will slot in easily into the same case. (Image credit: Future)Alternate Spinning can reduce the turbulence of adjacent fans and increase air pressure. The 3D Active Fan provides semi-passive cooling, and the fans will remain off when the GPU is in a low load or low power game. The airflow is spilt by the triangular fan edge, and guided smoothly through the 3D stripe curve on the fan surface. Graphene nano lubricant can extend the life of fan by 2.1 times, close to the life of double ball bearing, and is quieter. And when we say that the performance is exactly the same, we’re not really exaggerating. Across our entire suite of benchmarks, the RTX 3080 Ti is usually within 1-2 fps of the RTX 3090.

Interestingly, temperatures don't look too bad in FurMark, but the 3080 Ti was one of the hottest running cards in our gaming workload. 73 degrees Celsius (C) on the GPU core isn't particularly worrisome, though we did see GDDR6X temperatures well above 100C when gaming at 4K in multiple games. Again, we really wish Nvidia would have done a bit more to improve the RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition design — better GDDR6X thermal pads might have sufficed. Because, sure, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti does have more VRAM, with 12GB of GDDR6X compared to 10GB of the stuff on the original card, but it’s also on a faster 384-bit memory bus. That means you get 912 GB/s of memory bandwidth on the RTX 3080 Ti compared to the RTX 3080’s 760 GB/s. With faster VRAM, not to mention just more memory, the RTX 3080 Ti should be even more adept at 4K gaming in the future. Of course, you also get access to Deep Learning Super Sampling, or DLSS. This tech uses the Tensor cores – the RTX 3080 Ti has 320 of those – to upscale a lower resolution to your native resolution. The idea is that DLSS will let you turn on more of the shiny graphics options, so you don’t have to sacrifice image quality just to hit a decent framerate, especially at high resolutions like 4K.

Board Design

Finally, Nvidia has of course included the 12-pin power connector. It does mean that you’re probably going to have to use an adapter to power the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, but of course, Nvidia has included an adapter in the box. is a suite of synthetic benchmarks designed to offer a general gauge of how powerful a GPU is. Each test focuses on a different aspect of a GPUs performance. The Time Spy Extreme benchmark we use gauges DirectX 12 performance. DirectX 12 is the API used by most modern games, so it’s a good way to judge how a GPU will run games in general. This is probably due to the pre-release drivers we used while reviewing it, and likely a key reason why it didn’t beat the performance of the base RTX 3080. We’ll update this review with final benchmark scores when we get our hands on the 3080 Ti’s consumer release drivers.

Dropping down to 1440p, the gaps between the fastest cards narrow slightly, and AMD's Infinity Cache starts to play a bigger role. Where the RTX 3080 Ti placed second overall at 4K, just behind the 3090, it now drops behind the RX 6900 XT and lands in third place, with the RX 6800 XT nipping at its heels. It’s an extremely effective method of cooling the RTX 3080 Ti, and even with a peak power consumption of 350W, the RTX 3080 Ti peaks at just 78.9C. That is a lot higher than the RTX 3090’s 72C peak temperature, even though that card has the same level of power consumption. Fundamentally, nothing has changed with the Nvidia Ampere architecture. More games support ray tracing and DLSS, and driver improvements over the previous nine months have altered performance a bit since launch. Otherwise, the RTX 3080 Ti takes the same GA102 GPU found in the GeForce RTX 3090 and GeForce RTX 3080, disables two more SMs compared to the 3090, and slashes the VRAM capacity in half compared to the 3090. That's not actually that big of a deal in most games, and performance should generally be quite similar between the two. All GeForce RTX 3080 Ti graphics cards in the market are powered with the same 8nm GA102 GPU based on the Ampere architecture. It has 10240 CUDA cores, 320 TMUs, 112 ROPs, and 12GB of GDDR6X memory running on a 384-bit memory interface. These are all common to all RTX 3080 Ti graphics cards.

Clock Speeds

Horizon Zero Dawn is a beautiful open-world game full of advanced lighting, numerous moving parts and wonderfully detailed textures. The 3080 Ti played the game at over 60fps at every resolution, but we suffered stability issues throughout testing.
