About this deal

Decide where in the loft you want your boarding. Your decision will be influenced by the shape and size of your loft. There may also be obstructions such as vertical beams at awkward angles.

These screws are suitable for fixing tongue and groove boards to loft legs. They can also be used to fix loft legs to the joists. NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and Ulster Bank, which are all part of the NatWest Group, will now shut at least 172 of their bank branches in 2023 and 2024. Martin Lewis: What the Autumn Statement means for you – including wages, benefits, pensions, ISAs, housing, national insurance and more You can buy custom plastic legs to fit over joists and lift you up 200mm, but I worked out they where more expensive that the celotex, though that did include the cost of the fibreglass as well. Space blanket is glass fibre wool wrapped in aluminium foil. It offers more protection against itchy fibers, making it more comfortable to lay. It also have a heat reflective foil surrounding it.Need to shave off 9cm or get new ladder specc'ed for a 2.7m height.By adding 20cm of height to the existing joists, the floor to loft floorboard height would become approximately 2.69m. Meaning, when I stand on the last step of the ladder, I will need t lift up and over kinda to plant my foot on the floor as opposed to side stepping onto the floor.

Loading limit of existing ceiling structure should be confirmed by a structural engineer. Features of Loftleg Loft Flooring Leg This product raises the loft floor by 175mm on top of ceiling joists, ensuring insulation is not squashed and U values are maintained. Please note that 150mm of PIR foam board insulation is equivalent to 300mm of glass mineral wool. However, mineral is a much cheaper solution.

If installing glass fibre wool, then googles are a must. It will prevent your eyes from being irritated by the insulation. Developed by a team of engineers and designers the Loft Leg is strong, lightweight and easy to install. The Loft Leg is manufactured in the UK from recycled polypropylene, to ISO9001 standards and has been mechanically tested by independent experts. These boards have a tongue and grove system, which means they simply slot together. The separate boards are narrow enough to get through your loft hatch. Be aware your floor will be raised by 175mm via loft legs when installing your flooring. Ideally you should lower the floor level next to the hatch, this only needs to be a ledge you can climb onto. It will make life easier gaining access to your loft. Types of Insulation Compressed loft roll insulation can compromise thermal performance and reduce the energy efficiency of your home.

Fortunately there are companies which sell down light covers that are fire retardant, and draft proofing. Plastic Down Light Covers The Loft Leg is a unique design protected solution to avoid insulation compression when using your loft for storage. This means you will have 100mm of glass mineral wool between your joists. Then you will have 200mm of glass mineral wall 90 degrees to this, between your loft legs. Like the image below, however this particular loft used space blanket insulation. This is basically glass fibre wool wrapped in aluminum foil:

Squash this down to compress it between the joists (if it goes down enough) to then just board over as normal These days Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) are needed when people buy or sell houses. These certificates grade the energy efficiency of your home. Better insulation properties will help improve your EPC grade, meaning your home is more efficient to run. Energy efficient homes are less expensive to run. The reason why I was umming and ahhing here was because my loft ladder was rated to be installed to a floor to loft floorboard height of 2.6m. Here are the numbers: Loftlegs are strong and can support weights of 500kg however, they do not change the load bearing characteristics of a loft. Structural engineers recommend never storing more than 25kg per square metre of boarded area. Loading limit of existing ceiling structure should be confirmed by a structural engineer

That's because you have not done it yet From personal experience of doing it both ways cellotex is by far the easiest method, and I would never contemplate doing it the extra joists way again. Please note this product is not suitable for habitable rooms as the product is designed to fit on top of ceiling joists in boarded lofts used as storage. Dimensions

What height above the joists should I aim for given the 200mm of insulation? Should I clear the whole 200mm or would I get away with compressing it by 20-50mm? Below is a picture of loft legs being used with space blanket insulation. Loft legs are spaced about 30cm apart between every joist. Tongue and Groove chip board is then screwed to the loft legs. Make sure your loft space have adequate ventilation. Ideally there should be a cross flow of air in your loft, from one eave to another. The air enters your loft via the soffit boards within the eaves. I used Loft Lifters. I liked them as they were adjustable, for different height joists, and only needed one screw per leg to attach to a joist. You could also cut them, if needed. Sadly, they are made in Ireland, it seems, and look to be unavailable in the UK now, maybe due to Brexit. If your home is more than 10 years old, its likely you will benefit from extra insulation. The largest majority of heat lost from a building is via the roof. The purpose of loft insulation is to slow down the heat loss process. Loft insulation can also save you a lot of money on heating bills per year.
