In the past decade I have seen the best of zoos, I think. I have seen zoos mobilise conservation work in the far reaches of the world to save species few people had ever thought worth the bother. I have seen zoo staff hand-rearing threatened spiders, and I have released the creatures’ progeny into the wild with my own two hands. I have worked with zoo scientists who collect and analyse garden frogs and birds day in, day out, monitoring the spread of non-native diseases across Britain.

As the world’s oldest scientific zoo, London Zoo is unsurprisingly one of the best zoos in London. Located in Regent’s Park, it first opened its doors in 1828 and today houses over 20,000 animals from across the globe. This zoo is a great place to visit if you’re interested in learning about wildlife and seeing some of the world’s rarest creatures. You can laugh, but what’s so bad about ideas like these? They involve no captivity. There are no animals to feed and otherwise look after. The conservation message would come across far louder and clearer. “No: people want to see live animals!” The purists will grumble. But do zoo animals live and breathe and reproduce like wild animals? I’m no longer sure. However, the seagulls are proving to be a bit of a nuisance when it comes to trying to steal food from our visitors and our animal enclosures! We need to do what we can to keep the seagulls away from our main visitor dining areas, which is why we are looking for a team of people to join our Visitor Services team as ‘Seagull Deterrents’. The zoo consists of a reptile house, an insect house, an aquarium, and a large enclosure for penguins and seals on the outside of the aquarium. In fact, the Bristol aquarium is so good, we’ve decided it’s one of the best aquariums in England. You will be happy to know that the zoo is dedicated to working on conservation and breeding programs. We just love learning about unusual animals like the aardvark – they are so fascinating!

Oh, and get this – Longleat Estate has five lakes that offer some of the highest quality fishing in Britain. So if you’re into that, you’re covered! And for train lovers, they’ve got the Longleat Railway – a rideable mini train that’s one of the busiest in the country. It’s a scenic 1.25 mile journey through woodlands and along the lake. There are more than 180 birds from 50 species in the park. Any bird lover will enjoy visiting Gauntlet’s, even photographers love to visit and practise their fast moving wildlife photography. It’s also important to mention that they are dog-friendly so don’t hesitate to take your pooch with you. Their belief is that all children should have access to safe outdoor spaces irrespective of their socio-economic situation.
