About this deal

Then, along comes Contrast and it hits me, we can use the transparency of this new paint system to make marble in a stupid easy way. Marble wiithout needing to airbrush or hand paint the veins is possible and easier than ever. For the actual marbling, I use the new Wraithbone base paint. This is where the Saran Wrap and sponging comes into play.

Personally, I feel Guilliman Flesh produces rather stark results (as do the Fyreslayer Flesh and Darkoath Flesh from my experience). Fine for very muscular and animated faces, but I guess I’d prefer Reikland Fleshshade for the softer shading. Two coats of Reikland Fleshshade are pretty close to a single layer of Guilliman Flesh. Depending on where you live, the time it may take for your exchanged product to reach you, may vary. When the basecoat is smooth, most Contrast paints will dry with a surprisingly smooth and even finish. However, like washes, Contrast paints still have a tendency to pool on larger flat surfaces. Soak up any excess paint with a clean brush to reduce the amount of pooling. Contrast paints really benefit from a smooth primer (as do washes, as you can see). I also applied Guilliman Flesh over Wraithbone base paint. As a lot of layers were needed for perfect coverage, the finish wasn’t as smooth as with Wraithbone spray primer. You can see the Guilliman Flesh dried more uneven because of that. Sealing the surface with a coat of satin varnish might help to reduce this effect. The remaining miniatures from the box were painted up to match my existing Tyranid force. I have quite a large army of these guys already, as well as a subservient Genestealer Cult, so I’ll be dropping these straight into that collection – which actually featured in the Crusade section of the previous Tyranids codex.

Necrons: The Necrons are a mysterious and enigmatic army in the Warhammer 40K universe, known for their advanced technology and fearsome weaponry. The Necrons feature a range of machinery and soldiers, including infantry, gun turrets, and tanks. Terradon Turquoise can be used to paint the glowing energy sources and weapons of the Necrons, adding an otherworldly and ominous effect to their already menacing appearance. Volupus Pink: This strip should be almost reaching the front, leaving the face, tips of the claws and light. You could even experiment with painting the darker Contrast over “medium” base colours, for example, Wyldwood (dark brown) over Baneblade Brown (medium khaki/light brown) for a really deep dark brown. Or mix your Contrast paints with a lot of Contrast Medium or Lahmian Medium to use them as a wash or glaze. Pallid Wych Flesh: Apply a spot highlight to the shirt, ropes, net and belt, as well as a line highlight to the skin. Wash your brushes a lot, as the high-pigmented paint will easily creep up into the ferrule of your brush.

Blue Malayan Coral Snake : The effect on the body was achieved by using thinned Frostheart Contrast with a White Scar drybrush, wet blending with Blood Angels Red Contrast for the head and tail. Scales are Leviadon Blue with a Blue Horror drybrush. If you find yourself unsure of where to apply the highlights or spot highlights, look over the images alongside the guide and compare that stage to the last.

Marble is always something that has eluded me. I've tried doing it before with traditional brushwork and I never liked the results. I've seen folks doing marble with airbrushes, but until recently I didn't have access to one. Don’t apply Contrast paints too thinly or else the medium can’t do its magic. Apply them generously and soak up excess paint instead.

Terradon Turquoise is a bright and vivid color that belongs to the blue-green hue family. To complement and balance this color, we can use various other colors that belong to different hue families. Based on color theory principles, we can choose colors that complement, split-complement or analogous to Terradon Turquoise. Contrast paints are transparent by nature, even when applying several layers, though the colour will build up with multiple layers. The base colour will always shine through, so you’ll ideally want to apply them over a light basecoat. Don’t apply them too thinly, as the medium won’t be able to do its magic. It’s better to apply more and soak up any excess with a clean brush. Because of the transparent nature, the colour of the basecoat will affect the outcome of the paint – see the guides by Warhammer Chelmsford above. Stage 1 is basecoating. Base colours are applied using Citadel Contrast paints. This is applied in one even coat and provides a good, shaded basecoat. Ushabti Bone– A light, sandy bone color that provides a warm contrast to the bright cool hue of Terradon Turquoise. It can be used for highlighting or as a base color. Tyranids are a purely organic faction, which means that even within a fixed colour scheme there’s room for individual variation and mutation. This is great news if, like me, you have trouble figuring out the right recipe for the colour you want – you can experiment on different models and units until you’re happy, and the results won’t look odd at all!Contrast paints have very vibrant pigments and create a lot of “tonal variety”: recesses are suitable dark, pronounced areas lighter. Therefore, with a single layer of Contrast, you can combine basecoating and shading in a single step and will often end up with some basic highlights as well.
