Another street food delight, this is one of the most popular foods to eat on the island, so you won’t want to miss out on trying it. According to the distillery, it begins with the base rum of the Chairman’s Reserve line—a mix of pot and column distillate, unlike Admiral Rodney—and is then “steeped with ‘Bois Bande,’ a local Caribbean bark culturally known for its aphrodisiac qualities.” Bouyon is the perfect food to serve at family gatherings and celebrations – it’s easy to make a big batch, so this is a popular weekend dish in many St Lucian households, but you will see it on restaurant menus too. You’ll have the chance to try a few different rums while you’re there too! Piton Until recently, however, I had never tasted any of the products from St. Lucia Distillers, and thus had never sampled Saint Lucian rum. That changed recently thanks to some samples from current parent company Spiribam, the spirits division of Groupe Bernard Hayot (GBH). GBH is a major player in nearby Martinique’s rhum agricole industry, owning sister brands Rhum Clemént and Rhum J.M. The products of SDL, meanwhile, might be thought of as the molasses-based flip side to the coin of those classic French-style agricoles.Jamaica is a major rum producer, ranking first among all rum-producing countries. Despite the fact that Jamaica once had nearly 150 distilleries, only four of them are still in operation today: Appleton Estate, Hampden Estate, Worth Park Estate, and National Rums of Jamaica. This staple foodstuff is similar in texture to potatoes, however its taste can vary depending on whether it is ripened or matured; matured breadfruit tends to have a starchy taste. When it comes to health benefits, breadfruit has a high fibre content as well as high levels of potassium and vitamin C, meaning that it is considered to be a healthy option for people looking to lower their cholesterol or blood pressure. I was able to taste four rums from SDL: Two from the Admiral Rodney line, and two from the Chairman’s Reserve line. With that said, let’s get to tasting. TheSt. Lucia Distillers produce over ten different St. Lucia rums, including varieties of white, flavoured, spiced and aged spirits, as well as rum based liqueurs/cremes. They offer some excellent aged and spiced rums at very reasonable prices, along with some great premium sipping rums. Once prepared, all of the ingredients are tossed in a creamy paste before the pieces are fried until they are brown in colour. You can enjoy plenty of fresh seafood in St Lucia Rum Finally, the award-winning Admiral Rodney’s is often noted as being one of the finest rums ever to be produced.

St Lucia Rum

However, the impact of World War II dealt a severe blow to the Saint Lucian rum industry. The economic challenges caused by the conflict led to a significant decline in local production, which only began to recover its former levels starting from the 1980s. Varieties of Saint Lucian Rum Over the years, rum production in Saint Lucia continued to grow, leading to the creation of new types of rums and the establishment of new distilleries. In the early 20th century, the country experienced a prosperous period thanks to the expansion of the sugar industry, which led to a significant increase in demand for rum. I’m not sure why exactly this is referred to as a limited edition, because it seems to have been a made into a permanent, premium part of the Chairman’s Reserve lineup for the last few years, but it’s not really important. What is important is the liquid in this bottle: The crown jewel of the St. Lucia Distillers collection, as far as I’m concerned. This is some absolutely lovely rum.

Clearly, the fertile land of St Lucia means that the island is able to grow and produce amazing and mouth-watering foods. As a result, St Lucian cuisine offers visitors the chance to indulge in a whole host of delicacies, many of which are made using fresh, locally-sourced produce. Today, the island is home to several distilleries that carry on the tradition of rum production, each with their unique recipes and methods. The rum produced in Saint Lucia is renowned for its quality, complexity, and the distinctive characteristics that set it apart from rums produced in other parts of the Caribbean. One of the most prominent distilleries in Saint Lucia is St. Lucia Distillers, located in the scenic Roseau Valley. The distillery is known for its exceptional rums, including the Chairman’s Reserve and Admiral Rodney brands. These rums have garnered international acclaim for their quality and have put Saint Lucia on the map as a producer of premium rum. If Saint Lucian rums are so cherished, it's largely thanks to the expertise of local master distillers. They employ ancestral methods and scrupulously oversee the quality of ingredients to achieve exceptional spirits. Selecting Sugarcane Rum is a spirit made exclusively by fermenting sugarcane or its by-products, these being molasses and sugarcane juice. There are no real rules when it comes to rum production making it a very large and varied category. The process of making this spirit is a combination of fermentation and distillation. The enchanting island of Saint Lucia, set in the heart of the Caribbean, is not just a paradise for beach lovers and honeymooners but also a haven for rum aficionados. With its lush sugarcane fields and a rich history steeped in the art of distillation, Saint Lucia has established itself as a distinguished producer of world-class rum. The 1931 is a very complex blend of both pot- and column-distilled rums between 6 and 11 years of age, aged in a combination of bourbon and port casks, and bottled at a more substantial 46% ABV (92 proof). As an extra X-factor, it also contains a notable percentage of sugarcane juice rum, distilled from the estate’s own sugarcane fields next to the distillery. The distillery refers to this as “agricultural rum,” distinct but related to the concept of rhum agricole, but presumably similar in character. This portion is effectively the most “Lucian” product the distillery makes, given that everything about the spirit hails from Saint Lucia. Overall, at this price point especially, I find myself wishing for a bit more complexity or at least a bit of a bump in proof point. With that said, I feel like the Admiral Rodney line is meant to deliver these sort of streamlined, dark sugar flavors. Finally, let's not forget rum creams and other liqueurs. These sweet and creamy beverages are created by blending rum (often aged) with various ingredients such as milk, sugar, or fruits. They are ideal for finishing a meal or accompanying a dessert. The Distillery: At the Heart of Production There are several different ways to enjoy breadfruit. Usually, it is boiled in salted water and served as an accompaniment to a main dish. However, it can also be fried after boiling or combined with other ingredients, formed into a pie shape and baked.
