First is the movement. The SNK809 runs on the same Seiko 7s26 automatic movement that powers the famous SXK007—along with the rest of the SXK, SNK, SNZ, and Recraft models. This is Seiko’s basic in-house workhorse movement, which has proven to be reliable over the years. This model is available with a number of different dial colors, but this exact reference, the SNK803, has a beige/cream dial. Seiko provides a lot of choices in terms of dial color with their SNK line of watches. Here, the SNK803 boasts a dial of cool beige that, on the wrist, looks nice. After several apprenticeships and partnerships with foreign trading firms — one being F. Perregaux & Co. — he moved his shop to the main street of Ginza, Tokyo.

The movement isn’t finished to perfection, nor features decorations. But remember, that is not the point. Furthermore, this is not a Patek Philippe. At this price point, we don’t expect it to be. The movement has a very industrialized look to it, which of course goes very well together with the theme of the watch. Seiko is one of the few watch brands that’s a household name. From their humble roots in 1881 Japan, Seiko has become one of the largest manufacturers of watches in the world. Price and availability are definitely attractive features of the Seiko 5 SNK809. In fact, with so many relatively affordable mechanical watches available these days from both microbrands and longer-established brands, price and availability are probably THE primary strengths of the Seiko 5 SNK line. When it comes to field watches, Luminox and Victorinox are some of the best brands to start with. However, while they do dominate the field watch market, there are some top-notch military watches that can be found under brands too. One great example would be Seiko’s SNK803. The watch has 21 jewels. Since mechanical watches have lots of moving parts, it’s these jewels that help toreduce friction on the bearings and other pivotal points which in turn helps for the watch to last longer. The Seiko 5’s lume is easily visible in the field, while not being distracting. OTHER SEIKO 5 FEATURESThe other thing that makes the SNK809 worth buying is its size. While watches are slowly coming down in size, and there are more and more sub-40mm offerings available all the time, there are still not as many to be found in the 36-37mm range. For those with smaller wrists or those who prefer smaller or mid-sized watches, the SNK series fits the bill. The SNK809 is a light and comfortable watch with military-inspired styling, blending elements of classic field and pilots watches. The case is solid, the design is simple, and the bead-blasted matte finish is utilitarian. This all perfectly fits the military-field-pilot watch style. It’s well-built and doesn’t feel at all cheap in hand. The SNK803J2, SNK803K2 and SNK803P2 models, if they exist, would have a different band style or material. As for the bezel, it’s a bead blasted matte finish that matches the accents on the cream colored canvas watch strap. The Seiko 5 SNK series’ details look great paired with a canvas belt and beaded bracelets. SEIKO 5 REVIEW: A FEW NEGATIVES

This is an affordable watch that isn’t really designed for water wear and as such has a relatively basic water resistance rating. A 30m or 3 bar rating makes this watch suitable for everyday use. Splash/rain resistant. Not suitable for showering, bathing, swimming, snorkelling, water related work and fishing. SeikoSNK803 Watch Specifications The glass is hardlex crystal (Seiko’s proprietary type) which isn’t as scratch resistant as sapphire, but it is more impact resistant and it’s more scratch resistant than mineral quartz or acrylic glass.

The Seiko SNK803 is one of the most popular (and best) automatic wristwatches in its price category. Over the years, Seiko has manufactured millions of pieces of the SNK803 and it is easy to see why it is so immensely popular. The Seiko SNK803’s sporty, casual look is finished off with a rugged beige canvas strap which wonderfully complements the watch’s dial. If you are not familiar with canvas straps, this type of strap is frequently paired with outdoor watches due to their portability, comfort, and most importantly, its waterproof capabilities. Straps made of nylon, fabric, and leather perform terribly when exposed to wet surfaces, which can result in damage to the strap. As such, canvas straps are a much more recommended alternative for field watches like the Seiko SNK803. Price After 5+ years of wear now, the Seiko 5 SNK is still one of my favorite casual watches to wear year-round.
