About this deal

It worked and was durable. But many cyclists on the road racing scene took to waxing chains in a frying pan. Secret formulas mixed in the kitchen often led to chains being dipped in bespoke waxy lubricants overnight. Once it’s been properly cleaned and treated though, waxed chains have, in our experience, an incredible ability to shrug off dirt and grime. We've heard of riders going much further than this without needing to apply more lubricant, but the review deadline is pressing... If your chain looks anything like this, it’s costing you watts and wearing out your parts. David Rome / Immediate Media

Whichever lube you prefer to use, for the best results Trimnell suggests that you leave the lube on the chain overnight before riding for maximum benefit. According to ZFC, the difference between a good and bad lubricant can comfortably amount to five to ten watts at a 250-watt load. These losses increase in magnitude as the load increases, too.Very clean: Hundreds of miles in, your drivetrain will be noticeably cleaner. Dry to the touch and shifting like it had just left the work stand Simon Nash of Green Oil, which makes environmentally friendly lubes, explains: “Wet lube was the original lubricant of choice. Early brands used something like car engine oil. Its consistency trumped basic spray lubricants that were primarily designed to displace water.

WD40 or equivalent are effective at displacing moisture from your chain, so they can be useful to help stop it from rusting after you've cleaned it. But they won't help to reduce friction and wear in the drivetrain, they're easily washed off and they attract dirt. They're not as effective as a chain lube at reducing friction either. SMOOVE Prep was developed with special “stuff” (read: lots of technical polymer science stuff) that is specifically formulated to clean, dissolve and neutralize SMOOVE Universal Chain Lube in just two easy steps. You will find it far more effective than other degreasers you usually use requiring far less of it. Each bottle can degrease your drivetrain ten times over. If you take the time to look after your bike well, or you’re a racer or rider of a super high-end bike in the sunshine then dry lube is the way to go, and we found these were the most popular among the road.cc team, in particular Squirt chain lube, which is tenacious enough to use in crummy conditions too.

Waxed-based drip lubes are popular because they work well in both wet and dry conditions and for on and off-road applications. Wax lubes are made up of friction modifiers and or products like tungsten disulfide which are often emulsified in a carrier fluid; the liquid helps the particles get where they need to be and dries, leaving just the wax inside. Due to the nature of wax, it dries and doesn’t attract much grit and can also support additives like Teflon, while coating and protecting metal components. Looked at some standard grease in a hardware shop at the weekend - decided to send off for some TF2, a fraction of the quantity, because it's labelled as "for bikes". Do not confuse SMOOVE with any other chain lubricant. Applied correctly and SMOOVE is the best chain lube on the market for any discipline, in any weather.

Despite releasing All-Conditions, Wet and Indoor lubricants this year, the All Conditions lube is closest to the previous UFO drip in performance but is now white instead of grey. The CeramicSpeed bottle has a 'pea' inside to help mix the lubricant, the only lube to have this. Application is also easy with a very fine nozzle. The problem both iainc and davosaurusrex sights is down to over application. SMOOVE is VERY hard wearing. SO what is happening here, is you are applying too much, either at original application or after washing when you may not need to apply any more, you are indeed applying another layer. Over time, this will build up and build up. With SMOOVE, you don’t need to apply after every wash (unless you do a deep clean perhaps) and why SMOOVE Prep degreaser exists, to really break down old SMOOVE before reapplying. However, for the habitually lazy or fair-weather cyclist, a dry lube is going to be the preferred option.
