About this deal

Overall, this book did a good job of world-building for subsequent ones while at the same time providing enough story for it to also work as a book in it's own right and not just as a book one of a series. The narrator does a good job with this book, coping well with the task of making the extensive cast sufficiently distinctive from each other most of the time and keeping a suitable pace in what is quite a lengthy book. She slowed, still facing away, and laid the report down on one of the shelves lining the wall. “I believe now is the time for Maintenance to get involved. Having their input now that we know the problems will be…helpful. Please go coordinate with Darvus and set a time to revisit the plans.” Would you just calm down?” the bearded cop said, smiling at me as he stepped forward. “No one’s going to hurt you, all right? What’s your name?” Casey: Like most authors, I think that finding the will to sit down every day and start writing is probably the toughest part. But once you start, it's easier to keep going, so building that habit is really important.

This book has an interest take on 'Magic' and I loved it when the system and history was explained later in the book. There is plenty of action and fights. As I said before I liked the second half as it was more group building, character development and learning creative ways to you use powers but that is more personal preference. I opened my mouth to respond, my heart beating faster. Something bad was about to happen again, I just knew it–and I wouldn’t just be an onlooker this time.

Permission to head to Maintenance, ma’am,” I said. Really slather on the honorifics. Be a good little worker bee. “If Factory’s wing is going to continue, we’ll have to start on a new assessment immediately. I’ll meet with Darvus, let him know what’s going on. We can get started before any more time is wasted.” I ignored all of them. The wrapper crumpled instantly in my hand as I pushed myself upright, dumping the whole lot of it in the trash. Grabbing the to-go bag with her food, I turned for the door. I’m not stupid,” he spat. “I’m not going to sit idly until they come to finish the job. How long until the rest of them show up?”

Within a day of accepting the project he gave me a sketch, and I think I had the final cover you see on my book within a week, week and a half later. I was completely blown away by it, and fell in love instantly. The need to go rose up strong enough my hands shook as I sat at my desk, slapping the papers down in front of me. Even if I didn’t have Darvus’s pass, I could still make it fly. Slip out of Lorellan. As soon as I hit the Old Levels, no one would be coming after me. Sure, I’d have to wrangle my way into a new town. I’d need to find a way to convince them I was worth not-killing. It was doable. What, you think you’re being subtle? You’ll just walk in, talking the old tongue like you were born to it, and I’ll roll over for you?”

Hatim must’ve known something was up, because I could see a sheen of sweat glisten on his temples, too. “Um,” he said. His finger was tapping rapid-fire against the underside of the reports. But I’ve done a fair few projects since I arrived in Lorellan and neither of these signatures really look right,” I said. “I mean, I could be wrong, but it sure looks like-” The magical system is very nicely defined too. Only a select few are able to cast magic. They have the ability to use any type of magic, but they need a bit of help, and that help confines them to a very limited ability. A good way of thinking about it is they gain a superpower - unique to each caster. Just as importantly (to the magic system) is there are more casters than the 'help' (I'm really struggling not to give spoilers here) - and that creates a toxic environment where murder is commonplace. Even better, when a caster (who was able to cast) dies, their body turns to dust, neatly avoiding problems with law enforcement. Brilliant! Why would he think that?” the cop’s partner said, his brow furrowing. He stared at me, leaning closer like he could see straight into my soul. The guy wasn’t at the counter anymore. A sigh of relief slipped out of me as I saw his station replaced by a tiny, grinning brunette. Good. Maybe his manager had finally taken him down a notch.

Casey: When I write a book, I really do set out to focus on story and characters first and foremost. I personally choose to avoid focusing on hot-button social issues, as I tend to write punchy fantasy or scifi novels, and I think it would be very easy for it to come off like I was making light of an issue or using it as a tool. I very much don't want that, I want to make sure that if I have issues like that as major elements in the story, I'm giving them the care and attention they deserve. As such, I don't have any social issues as the core of my novel. What could I say, though? No? She wasn’t likely to take that with grace, and…as much as the thought of what might follow turned my stomach, the guy had screwed up pretty big here. Did you write this? the Lady said. She came to a halt in front of him. She was wearing a green skirt that day. The hem swished around after she stopped moving, finally coming to rest itself.

Boots scraped against the tiles as the door slid open with a barely-audible whine. The low, muffled sound of angry murmurs drifted closer by the second.
