About this deal

Most will find wider angle MF-only lenses easier to use for focal length-appropriate purposes than telephoto options as the generally-deep DOF allows more room for error. The USPS love stamps shared above have an image area that measures 1.05 x 0.77" (26.67 x 19.558mm), and the overall individual stamp size is 1.19 x 0.91" (30.226 x 23.114mm). Additionally, this was one of the first third-party lenses supporting AF to become available in the RF mount. With the right lens profile and software, lateral CA is often easily correctable (often in the camera) by radially shifting the colors to coincide.

REAL WORLD, these images are not corrected and straight out of camera, 2m away from the subject. In real world images the distortion would be less noticeable and correctable. For instance I can easily correct the XP lenses distortion to almost perfectly straight using just the tools in Light Room, I don’t even bother correcting landscape images where there are no straight lines, this is pretty normal behaviour for a quality 14mm lens, I have no doubt the new AF lens would be easily correctable to make lines perfectly straight, for landscape there would be no need. Here’s a couple of real world images from the NEW AF 14mm f2.8 EF lens. In the real world, lens defects do not exist in isolation, with spherical aberration and spherochromatism generally found, at least to some degree, along with axial CA.As a travel photographer, I’ve worked hard to minimize my gear. I would love to own a dozen lenses, I just don’t want to carry them all. It’s rare to find more than three lenses in my bag. Barrel distortion is reasonably minimal but this Samyang isn’t a ‘zero distortion’ lens (Image credit: Matthew Richards) I’m also really happy with the size of the lens. While it isn’t a small lens, per se, it is a reasonably compact one with a nice weight. Samyang had previous released it’s manual focus 14mm F2.8 in an RF mount, though that lens wasn’t a fresh design for mirrorless. It weighs in at 800g (1.8 pounds) compared to the more svelte 523g (1.15 pounds) of the RF14. The Canon 15-35mm F2.8L IS, by comparison, weighs 840g (1.85 pounds), though that comparison hardly seems fair considering the zoom range and image stabilization that the RF 15-35 sports. Still, if traveling light (or working from a gimbal) is important to you, that extra bit of weight savings could be a big deal.

APS-C sensor format cameras are not exempted from this issue and a strong barrel distortion should be expected in such images. To generalize, image sharpness improvements made by stopping down are not as abrupt in the periphery of the image circle. Still, distortion correction is destructive at the pixel level as some portion of the image must be stretched or the overall dimensions reduced. Featuring 7 rounded blades, it adds an artistic touch to your pictures and creates a sense of soft dimension with incredible starburst, bokeh, perfect for out-of-focus portraits and night city landscapes. Still, the uses for this angle of view are plentiful, with landscape photography and portrait photography perhaps benefiting the most from the difference. At F4 the corners are really sharp, we can still see some vignetting but it has improved. AT f5.6 the vignetting is pretty much gone, image is very sharp across the frame at F8 it is pretty much the same. The lens has no problem showing a lot of detail. We didn't experience very much "hunting" at all, either in good or bad light, with the lens accurately focusing almost all of the time. It has a quiet focusing mechanism, too, which makes this lens well-suited to video recording. In the AF 14mm F2.8 RF lens, Samyang have employed an iris diaphragm with seven rounded blades, which has resulted in fairly nice bokeh for this ultra-wide-angle lens. While image stabilization is a very useful feature, the low 14mm magnification tends to keep details within their pixels, even at longer focal lengths, making stabilization less necessary.

The list of uses for 22mm is very similar to the 14mm list, but with the narrower angle of view, the uses shift away from dramatic perspectives and ultra-grand landscapes toward an often easier to manage field of view Samyang did really well with their XP 14mm f2.4 so I had high hopes for the image quality of this lens. It didn’t disappoint, it’s very sharp, even to the corners, I didn’t have problems with purple fringing, flare etc It seems to perform very well.Geometric distortion makes framing a scene with a straight horizon, such as the ocean, challenging as there are no lines parallel to the edges of the viewfinder or viewfinder gridlines. The 6-blade aperture creates hexagonal shapes from out of focus points of light and those shapes are not evenly filled, having a rough appearance. Astigmatism, lines in opposing directions being focused at different focus distances, would explain this problem.

While the camera's autoexposure system can still be used, the aperture is *always* manually set via an aperture ring located near the lens mount. The Samyang AF 14mm F2.8 RF has a generously sized focus ring given the overall size of the lens which is ridged for easier grip. There are no hard stops at the ends of the range, making it more difficult to set focus at infinity. Build quality is very good. The Samyang AF 14mm F2.8 RF lens has an aluminum alloy housing and a metal mount too. The optical elements are made of high-grade glass and aspherical lenses have been included to minimise aberration and unnecessary light dispersion. Samyang used to make their lenses available in a variety of brands, but market demand led to only the top-selling Samyang and Rokinon-brand lenses remaining in its product lineup.Note that, with the focus confirmation chip, the Nikon version of the Samyang 14 is modestly more expensive and that this higher price is factored into these comparisons.
