About this deal

While blended bottlings dominate Irish whiskey exports, the country is also known for its unique single pot still style. To be considered a single pot still whiskey, producers are required to use a combination of malted and unmalted barley, and the spirit must be distilled by one distillery using a copper pot still. Single pot still whiskeys are generally known for being smooth, approachable and rich, showcasing flavor notes of honey, vanilla, and caramel. Today, Redbreast 12 is among the best-selling Irish single pot still whiskeys in the world. Redbreast and Jameson have a closely intertwined history. The name “Redbreast” comes from the European Robin (known as Robin Redbreast), a bird that is native to Ireland and is known for its distinctive red-orange plumage. The chairman of Gilbey’s around the early 1900s was an avid amateur ornithologist and decided that the bird would make a perfect symbol for the whiskey. Redbreast is a uniquely Irish whiskey. After suffering from political and economic turmoil, the whiskey took a hiatus from 1985-1991, when it was given a revamp with a new distiller and the addition of the highest quality sherry and bourbon casks. In recent years, the distiller has released other Redbreast whiskeys, including the Redbreast Cask Strength, Redbreast 21, and other limited edition releases. Here's a case in point. From Irish Distillers Ltd, Redbreast is a 'Single' unblended, pure pot still Irish whiskey made with malted and unmalted barley which has been triple distilled. Our tasting found powerful, sensuous aromatics, at first reminiscent of creaming soda then vanilla wafer and sweet cereals enter giving this a Bourbon slant. The entry is soft and light. Mid palate turns deliciously creamy with semi-sweet, toasty cereals and brandy cream sauce flavours superbly counterpointed by spicy, drying oak. Finishes crisp and dry with terrific length as the vanilla wafer biscuit again emerges followed by a late creme-caramel fade. An Irish with soul and distinctive style, this also offers a mouthfeel that’s uncommon. Its lightness of body combined with depth of flavour make for a terrific aperitif.40% Alc./Vol.

Essentially, it’s whiskey that is made from malted and unmalted barley and no other grain. It is unblended (thus the “single pot” bit.) And it must be made in Ireland to be considered as such. A faux aged piece of paper with a red breasted bird on the front, and a bunch of brand information in far too large a font. What makes me a little annoyed is that the entire bottle is a smoked green glass. I get that smoky green glass is kinda the “thing” for Irish whiskey, but I really wish sometimes that they wouldn’t do it. Or, at least, wouldn’t do it to this degree of opaqueness. You can barely see how much spirit is left in there, much less enjoy that amazing color until it finally comes out in your glass.

Redbreast is available in a range of expressions, from the classic 12 year old to the rare and highly sought-after 27 year old. Each expression is aged in ex-bourbon and sherry casks and each has its own unique flavor profile, with notes of vanilla, caramel, and spice being standard throughout the range. Redbreast is the perfect whiskey for bird lovers. Whiskybase B.V. Gilbey’s, the company responsible for creating the Redbreast brand, originally sourced its whiskey from the Bow Street distillery in Dublin where Jameson was made. By the mid-20th century, Irish whiskey production had been reduced to three distilleries. In 1966, at the nadir of the Irish distilling industry, Cork, Jameson, and Powers distilleries combined their resources and became Irish Distillers. Irish Distillers continued to provide single pot still whiskey to Gilbey’s, which still bottled and sold Redbreast until 1986 when the brand was sold to Irish Distillers. Redbreast is a single pot still pioneer. From there, the mixture is pumped into a copper pot still where it is distilled three times. Then the newly made whiskey is placed into a combination of American bourbon barrels and previously used sherry casks to mature for a period of at least 12 years.

Warm rich pot still malty goodness followed by notes of fruit, honey, vanilla, spice and citrus with a nutty undertone that ties everything together. I love the flavor of this whiskey almost as much as the aroma. Redbreast is distilled at the Midleton Distillery using copper pot stills and aged in Oloroso sherry casks. Home to several other single pot still Irish whiskeys, Midleton Distillery also produces Jameson and Tullamore Dew. Compared to either of those whiskeys, Redbreast 12 year is smoother but also more complex. Its sweetness is subtler, though still present. Its finish is smoother and lingers longer. Gilbey’s continued to source Redbreast from the Jameson distillery until it closed in 1971, when production moved to the new consolidated Midleton distillery. Production would continue there until Gilbey’s decided to discontinue the brand in 1985, eventually selling it to the Irish Distillers group (who also own Jameson) in 1986. The brand was eventually relaunched in 1991 and remains owned by the Irish Distillers group. Mmmm, I tell ya, that Single Pot Still character stirs something in me every time I smell it. Rich, sweet and a little oily that wonderful character is accompanied by notes of fruit, vanilla, nuts, spice, citrus and some light sweet, almost floral, notes that drift through on the tail.W&A Gilbey was a wine and spirits merchant founded by Sir Walter Gilbey in 1857. Originally a purveyor of gin within England, by 1861 the company had opened a branch in Dublin to expand their operations. To cater to the local tastes, they began blending and selling their own version of Irish whiskey which was sourced from the Jameson distillery and aged in their own proprietary method. This is the world's best whisky! Drinkstrade.com.au have reported that Redbreast 12 Year Old has won the World Whisky Trophy at the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) 2019. The competition awarded Redbreast 12 an impressive 98 points, narrowly beating world whisky competitors from Australia, South Africa, Denmark, India, Taiwan and Switzerland, among many others. I’m also getting something in here like… stale honey? I don’t think honey can actually go stale, but if it were, that’s what I’m getting. It’s like a muted sweet note with some floral aspects, and I don’t hate it. In the mid-20th century, the popularity of single pot still whiskey waned as drinkers began to favor blended Irish whiskeys. Redbreast was one of the few brands that continued making the style through those years. In recent decades, the Irish distilling industry has seen significant growth, and newer distilleries like Teeling are continuing the Irish single pot still tradition to this day. Redbreast is distilled at the same distillery as many popular Irish whiskeys.
