Plums come in a wide range of colours, flavours and sizes, and include sweet, juicy gages, richly flavoured damsons and luscious French mirabelles. There are also many varieties of each type, for eating fresh and/or cooking. Dual-purpose varieties are a good option if you only have room for one tree, so you can get maximum use from your crop. This is another purple that comes very close to being a red. After all, based on the RGB value, you can see that it contains much more red than blue. And interestingly enough, it doesn’t include cyan (but is over 50% magenta). Its deep, slightly dusky color makes it pair nicely with slightly brighter colors. Different varieties offer a wealth of delicious fruit options – various levels of sweetness and juiciness, different textures, colours and sizes, as well as a range of crop sizes and ripening times. In colder locations, consider a late-flowering variety such as ‘Blue Tit’, ‘Marjorie’s Seedling’ and ‘Oullins Gage’, to avoid damage to the blossom, which can reduce the crop. Varieties with an RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM) are recommended by our RHS fruit experts, as they performed well in trials – see our list of AGM fruit and veg.

This unique shade of purple is fairly close to what most of us likely picture when we imagine purple. It’s neither too red nor too blue. Its complementary color is a very slightly brown shade of green. In this combination, Kikyo-iru offers a picture of understated elegance.Plucots come under the category of late-season, with their fruits being ready for harvest (become ripe) by the end of July or August. Therefore, they are suitable for imports and are exported to other countries with ease. Pluots If you are looking for the largest type of plum, then the ‘Owen T’ cultivar is thought to be the biggest. A single plum can weigh up to 8 oz. (230 g) and measure a whopping 3” (7.5 cm) across. These large plums have bluish-dark purple skins surrounding sweet flesh that is a light yellow color. ‘Owen T’ plums are usually ready for eating in mid-season. ‘John W’ Plums A cross between a gage and a plum, Opal has taken on the full sweet flavour of the gage side of its parents but with a slightly larger fruit. Plums are produced early in the year, late July in some areas, and …… read our detailed and full review of this plum tree variety (including picture) here. SHROPSHIRE DAMSON Plums are one of the most loved and luscious fruits in the world which grow on trees. They are classified in the genus Prunus. Plums are a sub-variety of drupes because they have a seed in the center surrounded by soft and sweet flesh. More than 40 varieties of Plums exist in nature, and around 45kg of medium size fruits can be obtained from a plum tree in a year. This beautifully unique, dusky color is a little like that of lavender fields at the golden hour. If you like mauve but need something with a little more red, it’s an ideal choice. Twilight Lavender Purple fits in well with grays, and it also looks good alongside some shades of green or blue.

This distinctive color is named after the purple amaranth, a species of pigweed. It’s sometimes called livid amaranth. This plant features unusual “flower spikes” that offer a welcome contrast to typical blooms. Florists sometimes use cuttings of purple amaranth to add variety to flower bouquets, and this plant can also be grown in gardens. Use a small sharp knife to slice off the top and bottom of the grapefruit. Cut down the sides, following its natural curve, to remove the skin and white pith. Over a small bowl, cut between the membranes to remove the individual segments, then slice the segments in half, collecting a tablespoon of the juice for the dressing. If you’re a sports fan, you may recognize this purple on sight. It’s the exact color used for the Lakers logo. Not surprisingly, Lakers Purple looks good alongside yellow and other bright colors. Artist’s Purple is another shade that is close to magenta. This bright, bold color is essentially a darker version of magenta, and it’s a great choice if your project requires a louder color than most shades of purple.Although called a satsuma plum, they have nothing to do with the citrus fruit. The common name blood plum refers to the deep red color of the skin and flesh. Satsuma plums are a semi-clingstone variety, meaning that the flesh partially clings to the stone. These Japanese plums tend to be larger in size than European red plums. Simca Plums Though the ocean isn’t necessarily purple, it’s easy to see how this color got its name. It has a similar depth to the blue-green color of most oceans, and it’s watery and calm. While this is a deeper color than the traditional orchid color, it is in no way to be considered a dark purple.

We have included Mirabelle here for a couple of reasons firstly because it is so easy to grow in the UK, so easy in fact that it is often found growing wild. The picture of the plums below are taken from a tree which has grown in significant shade on a countryside pathway but it still produces a large crop of fruit every year. This variety features superior disease resistance but is partially self-fertile, which means they produce better with a nearby pollinating partner. So if you are planning to plant this in your garden, plant a different variety of plum as a pollinating partner too. Avalon plum trees need good conditions to thrive and cannot withstand extreme climates. 4. Cambridge Gage This pretty, medium shade is close to what most people think of when they imagine purple. The particular purple looks a bit like Electric Purple, and it’s somewhat bright in color without being pale. Thanks to its high proportion of magenta, this purple shade is somewhat high-energy and works very well as an accent color. It is a better plum variety choice for the areas in Uk that experience late spring frost. It is a favourite among plum enthusiasts as it is hardy, disease-resistant, self-fertilizing, and a reliable heavy cropper. If you want to plant more than one plum tree, It is a must among plum varieties to enjoy the fruits for an extended period. 8. Belle de Louvain

This soft pink has enough lavender hues to pass for a purple shade. Making its display as a Pantone color, it is named after the color most seen attributed to typical fairy garb.

Plum trees are generally hardy, healthy and easy to grow, but several pests, diseases and weather conditions can cause problems, including: The iris is a vibrant flower that comes in a whole range of colors. Iris is a well-balanced purple that manages to be light without being washed out. This springlike shade pairs very well with green and yellow pastels.Despite the name, Ultra Violet isn’t an overwhelming or incredibly loud purple shade. If anything, it’s one of the quieter ones on the list. As a bluish-purple, it’s a lovely shade if you want a calming color that’s still in the purple family. Its complementary color is a somewhat dull olive green, and it also looks nice near various shades of gray. Moyer plums are a common purple plum and one of the most popular varieties. These are extremely sweet plums that have dark burgundy to purple skin and juicy yellow-orange to amber flesh. This plum variety is considered one of the best European plums for its shape and taste. Moyer plums are large plums with a long oval shape and high sugar content. This species of plum is delicious fresh and is often dried to create sweet prunes. Taste: Flavour is one of the important consideration for most gardeners. There is a guide to taste under the ‘quality’ category listed below for each cultivar. However, you may be able to try plums for yourself at fruit events. Named for the ancient Greek city of Byzantium (now Constantinople), Byzantium and Dark Byzantium are reminiscent of splendor. If you prefer a darker, more demure version of the classic Byzantium, you may find Dark Byzantium to be to your liking.
