Sacco is in the company of two female Israeli tourists who question him about his one-sided journey into history. They encourage him to visit Tel Aviv, which he does. However, this trip only cements his desire to provide a counternarrative centered on the Palestinians’ experiences, accounts, and oral history. Characters Or how about the kids that get sent to open-air prison camps in the desert? For what? Throwing stone at Israelis. Putting oral accounts and histories into captions gives them more authority. Similarly, in chapter 2, Sacco uses the traditional layout of a textbook, placing the narration in columns and embedding pictures into the format. His choice of layout is used to place this counternarrative on equal footing with the more prevalent Israeli historiography.

A story told in comic strips

Hands down one of the best comic books (and pieces of journalistic writing) that I have ever read. It's really up there with Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis and (in my humble opinion) the best and most clever comic book series out there, Gaiman's The Sandman. I hereby vow to get further into Sacco's work. He seems like an intelligent man with a great (albeit somewhat dark) type of humour, and I enjoy the political / historical focus of his work. Eventually returning to the United States, by 1985 Sacco had founded a satirical, alternative comics magazine called Portland Permanent Press in Portland, Oregon. [1] When the magazine folded fifteen months later, he took a job at The Comics Journal as the staff news writer. [9] This job provided the opportunity for him to create and edit another satire: the comics anthology Centrifugal Bumble-Puppy [10] [1] (a name he took from an overcomplicated children's toy in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World), published by The Comics Journal 's parent company Fantagraphics Books. For the average Westerner, the hooding of a detainee, stress positions, sleep deprivation … obviously all Americans know that goes on now, but those sorts of things go on in cells all over the world. Collected over two month between 1991 and 1992, Palestine makes the history and suffering of the Palestinian people real. Emphasize on people… both as a group and individually.

In Rafah, almost all men of military age had reputedly been caught up in the incident so there were likely to be survivors still living whom he could interview at length. As a result, Footnotes in Gaza is divided in two. A first, shorter section investigates the killings at Khan Younis, and a second, longer section is devoted to events in Rafah. I wasn’t trying to reconcile the differences between Israelis and Palestinians. I wanted to show some of the small issues related to the occupation. In fact, I don’t think I showed anything spectacular. Awards 2000s". Comic-Con International: San Diego. December 2, 2012. Archived from the original on October 6, 2014 . Retrieved May 20, 2021. In fact we’ve had it shoved down our throats all our lives! No if, no but, no ‘other side’ for Palestinians. Nevins, Mark. 2002. "Drawing From Life: An Interview with Joe Sacco." International Journal of Comic Art 4 (2; Fall): 1-52 Showing physical trauma, psychologically, would make it more difficult to bond with the reader, which is what I ultimately wanted to do.

I went thinking, well, I’ll do a travelogue of my experience there, but I knew I’d be talking to people and taking notes, so when I got there, I felt the journalist impulse came to the fore, interviewing people, getting stories, looking at the occupation and needing to do something about it. Drawing on first-hand experiences, extensive research and more than 100 interviews with Palestinians and Jews, Sacco has gained access to unusually intimate testimony, giving space to details and perspectives normally excluded by mainstream media coverage. The enthusiasm and frequency with which Sacco is hauled into the homes of those he meets - to listen, take notes and drink endless cups of tea - underlines the desperation of the people he encounters; their hopes are pinned not on political promises but on telling their stories to a stranger who writes comic books. The response was immediate: “Citizens of Israel…We are at war and will win.” With these words the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared war on Hamas. This was much to the detriment of the Palestinian people, as has been seen across the world’s media in recent weeks.Sacco uses the comic book format to its fullest extent, creating bold perspectives that any photojournalist would envy."
