About this deal

The Script Dyna Comp like the regular Dyna Comp that came before has a simple set of two controls. The output which sets the overall volume level of the pedal meaning you can actually boost the volume of your guitar using this pedal and the sensitivity control. This acts as your compressor threshold and ratio in one, but in general the more you turn it up the more compressed your signal becomes. Here's what MXR say about the Script Dyna Comp Compression Pedal The original MXR Script model which is not available nowadays uses the classic MXR white/yellow PCB with a distinctive shape. It was a one layer PCB with all the components on one side. When Dunlop acquired MXR in 1987, the PCB was progressively redesigned using modern materials/components and a double-sided PCB with red solder mask. The plot of the Input Stage freq response shows a unity gain and a filtering of the excess of bass (dc-level), preserving a good flat response between 20Hz and 20KHz. The input capacitor C1 (10nF) gives DC isolation and together with R2 (1MΩ) - R1 is ignored because 10K is much smaller than 1M - and the input impedance of the Emitter Follower (equal to 1MΩ and calculated in the next point) creates a high pass filter:

This is due to the fact that you’ve probably boosted the overall output of the signal after the compressor, which makes it louder than it was before compressing it (and louder is ALWAYS better!). The MXR Dyna Comp is revered in the guitar world as being one of the “first” guitar pedal compressors. The reason I bring this up is that you will hear this phrase used over and over whenever somebody talks about David Gilmour’s tone. Somebody will ask ‘how does he get that tone in Comfortably Numb?’ only to receive the reply:‘it’s all in his fingers’. That’s a cop-out answer and doesn’t help. Compression pedals will all still have the above factors in the circuit’s internal design, but many of the features are simplified or set at a fixed rate to help guitarist’s achieve their desired uses more easily. Why Should I Choose an MXR Dyna Comp Pedal?

David started off using Leslie rotating speakers and used them as part of his live rig. In the early 70s he started using a UniVibe pedal ( the Jimi Hendrix guide goes into detail on UniVibe as well as good options). Fear not, bassists - we haven't forgotten about you. Darkglass makes some of the best bass effects pedals around, so including a compressor from any other brand seems rude. That's why I chose the Dyna Comp - they obviously have the recipe right since it's basically the industry standard in compression pedals, used by so many players for so long. This frees me up to not think about compression any more - just play. Play with a significantly better sound than before.

You can trust Guitar World Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing guitar products so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test. The output does not actively vary the gain, so more ‘open’ sounds will tend to be high output, low sensitivity, and more ‘squashed’ sounds will be higher sensitivity, and lower output. Sensitivity Transconductance is a way to measure the gain of an amplifier relating the input voltage with the output current and usually designated with the letter gm and measured in Siemens. In a nutshell, the CA3080 is basically an amplifier whose differential input voltage produces an output current. To understand its functionality, it is important to understand the concept of how an audio compressor works: The Dyna Comp Compressor is famous for its first-rate, no-nonsense approach to tightening up your guitar signal and creating rich, full-bodied sustain. Like the Phase 90, this little red gem is a legend among its kind. The pedals produced in the mid-'70s are particularly prized for their unique sound and performance.

About MXR Dyna Comp

For example, a fuzz distortion pedal is crucial if you want to try and replicate his dirtier tones, but if you’re only interested in his clean tones, you can skip it. David Gilmour Guitars
