In Spitting Image, Mrs Thatcher was the central villain of the whole piece. We had her like Churchill smoking cigars, and at the urinals peeing with the men. We mistreated her terribly. The schoolboy Damian's choice of another path wasn't necessarily high-minded. For a tall asthmatic boy aware of his gayness, and not particularly adept at hiding it, schools and libraries were natural places of refuge. Tweaking Blanche Dubois's celebrated line, he says he has always depended "on the kindness of teachers". Even the Scripture Union had its value, more on account of the absence of bullies than the presence of Jesus. Maggie and Me is a fashion-forward coastal boutique that specializes in casual clothes for women, girls, tweens, toddlers, and infant girls and boys. The store is also known for beautiful gifts and gift wrapping. As for the rest ... all the uncles, aunts and cousins. For years, concern for their feelings stopped me writing. When I finally accepted that those who loved me would never stop and those who didn't would never start, I began to tell my story.

But in many ways we helped to keep the Tories in power. It was the most disliked government of the century. Spitting Image acted as a safety valve. Instead of rioting, people watched the show and got vicarious pleasure from seeing Mrs Thatcher hit over the head with a truncheon.

And I” is so often drilled into children as the correct formulation that we can sometimes forget that it mainly applies when followed by a verb. In many situations, “and me” is actually correct. Because of its nature I found it difficult to admit to liking it as much as I did. It feels wrong, somehow, admitting to pleasure from knowing about another’s hardships. But Damian Barr writes in the perfect way: presenting his story without bitterness or sentimentality, and speaking with a forgiving voice. Because of this, the reader can have no trouble indulging in this lovely piece of writing, supporting its hero all the way, taking the extreme brutality of those early days with a grave nod, and subsequently grinning wildly at the knowledge that Barr is writing it from the life he always wanted. So, somehow, he rose above what tried to bring him down. Would they shout at me? Throw more than just insults? As for including Maggie herself, Damian has done this in a very unique and effective way. I see this book as a balanced look at what Maggie did for (and took away) from the people of Britain. Destroying the livelihood of the people surrounding Damian, reducing benefits of the poor and blaming them for being poor, clause 28 etc and on the other side inspiring a young boy to work hard and become successful. Victory in the 1982 Falklands War helped Thatcher to win votes in Britain, and secure her second term in office – and it also made her a heroine to the territory's 3,000 residents. Cover up the other name in the sentence and the word “and,” and you’ll be able to tell right away which formulation makes good grammatical sense.
