About this deal

On 9 October 2006, it was confirmed that the second series of Life on Mars would be the last. Matthew Graham stated: "We decided that Sam's journey should have a finite life span and a clear-cut ending and we feel that we have now reached that point after two series". [9] Graham's claim that two endings had been filmed was later revealed to be a ruse. [10] Transmission [ edit ] Whilst more than adequate in the role, in all truth, Keitel is not a patch on Philip Glenister. Keitel plays Lieutenant Gene Hunt as a laconic, seen-it-all American cop of the old school. Unfortunately, he doesn’t possess the wit and in-yer-face ‘harsh but fair’ charisma that Glenister brings to DCI Gene Hunt. Perhaps because Glenister nailed the part so convincingly in the first place, it’s very difficult to accept anyone else in the role.

The first series was nominated for a British Academy Television Award (BAFTA) in the Best Drama Series category. John Simm was also nominated as Best Actor for his work on the show. [60] The programme won the audience-voted "Pioneer Award". [61] You get the two Life on Mars Series collections in two Amaray sized cases with four discs apiece, both in a single card slipcase. The Amaray cases hold two discs overlapping on the front panel, and two overlapping on the rear. The first episode of sequel series Ashes to Ashes shows that the protagonist, DI Alex Drake of the Metropolitan Police, has been studying Tyler's notes and 2006-era personnel file, in which his photograph is overstamped with the word " SUICIDE" - consistent with what happened in the series finale. Ashes to Ashes implies that Gene Hunt's world is in some sense real, and states that Sam lived on in that world, during which time he married Annie but had no children.

For example, during Series 1: Episode 6 Sam hears the voice of his mother in 2006, telling him his life-support will be switched off at 2:00 pm. At the same time he is called into a hostage-taking situation, where the perpetrator states that he will kill his victims at precisely the same hour. Sam also encounters as their younger selves people whom he knows in the future, including suspects, friends, his own parents, and himself as a child. Life On Mars US is an intriguing all-American take on a phenomenally successful UK series. For the most part, it works because it’s so faithful to the original British model. However, there are just enough differences (especially the final scene!) to give it its own identity. The idea of moving Sam’s home town of Hyde to an eerie deserted seaside locale, reminiscent of Twin Peaks, is inspired and opens up the series in a fresh direction. The acting is of a high standard and in general the production values remain true to the period.Does this sound like I’m damning it with faint praise? Not at all. Life On Mars remains one of my all-time favourite TV shows, but that was never because of the setting, the structure or the premise, although all of those things are great. No, what makes Life On Mars so special, what makes me smile from ear to ear every time I watch it and what makes revisiting it always feel a little bit like coming home, is the characters. Spanish Television network Antena 3 bought the rights from the BBC and has remade the show as La Chica de Ayer (English: The Girl from Yesterday, the title taken from a 1980 pop song), set in 1977 post- Franco Spain. [23] a b "Life on Mars creator confirms third and final series is in the works". The Guardian. London. 3 April 2020 . Retrieved 4 April 2020. And the central plight of Sam Tyler, while never really the driving force of the show, offers so much to think about, especially when considered through the lens of the series’ final episode. I love that Life On Mars doesn’t give a solid answer to exactly what Sam’s situation is. The solution, confirmed by Ashes To Ashes, is there for those who want to find it, but it was never the main focus of the show. Life On Mars is the story of a man realising that the last place he wanted to be is exactly where he is meant to be. The second series was broadcast weekly at the same time as the first but on Tuesdays. [12] According to Jane Featherstone, the show's executive producer, speaking in February 2006, a film version of the show was also a possibility: " Life on Mars was a very high concept idea and there was no doubt it would work on the big screen". [13]

The UK version of Life On Mars ran for 16 episodes over two seasons. Those sixteen episodes have been expanded and Matthew Graham has added a whole extra episode. The first few shows remain very faithful, the majority, though, are a little more freeform. For instance, Annie’s promotion only occurs in the final episode and the end of the series really has to be seen to be believed! The finale is very well done and a more satisfying conclusion than in the UK version… if you really can suspend your disbelief, although Red Dwarf fans may find some of it familiar… After the premiere, each of the remaining fifteen episodes begins with a short teaser before a monologue in which Sam repeats, as part of the moving imagery of the title sequence: Clifton, Jane (21 February 2007). "Reasons to be cheerful: Part one". Stuff.co.nz. Archived from the original on 15 October 2007 . Retrieved 24 February 2007. In October 2007, series two was nominated as the Most Popular Drama at the 2007 National Television Awards. [62] YearAnother theme in the show is Sam's confusion about police work in 1973, as he often mistakenly mentions techniques and technologies that were not used in 1973, such as two-way mirrors. One such theme is that Sam continually gives criminals the updated version of the right to silence warning, which was changed in 1994. When he does so, someone around him usually points out that he is giving the warning incorrectly. Graham, Alison (10–16 February 2007). "Today's Choices, Monday 13 February: Life on Mars". Radio Times. 332 (4322): 78. Burrell, Ian (27 March 2006). "Television Drama: Great show – now direct it". The Independent. UK. Archived from the original on 1 October 2007 . Retrieved 6 January 2007. The point really is that production companies are on a tight schedule, sometimes they cannot get into protracted negotiations which will hold up the final product. sometimes they will have to go with what they have (i.e. TV rights only0 and try to sort out dvd rights later. They will either succeed, or fail. If they fail, then they look for another choice for the dvd.
