Any minute now he was going to tell them they were Jedi Knights, or lost members of an alien race, or . . . something.” Isobel has plenty of secrets, but one she's hiding from herself is how her penchant for illicit substances has edged dangerously into addiction and she's beginning to spiral at the worst possible time.

If you’re a fan of Legacies and are looking for similar shows and films to watch, there are a few options to consider. First, The Vampire Diaries and The Originals are obvious choices, as they share the same universe and mythology. The practice sessions with Burke might as well not even have happened for all that the author didn’t even tell us what happened. Ex. Spirit groaned theatrically, shaking her head, and stepped toward him on the practice mat again. The night of the Legacy Ball is supposed to be the best night of these seniors’ lives, a night of haute couture, endless champagne, and plenty of hushed gossip. Everyone expects a night of luxury and excess. No one expects their secrets to come out. Or for someone to die trying to keep them hidden. There are no plans at the moment, but according to TVD and Originals showrunner Julie Plec, there are still stories to be told. [7]

JULIE PLEC: First of all, it is my hope and desire that The Originals lives on [for] many more seasons to come, precisely for those kinds of opportunities, that we can take this world that we have developed, with the Mikaelson family, and occasionally have a little drive-by or a repopulation with these characters that we love. I'm not going to say anything about how this season ends, or the series ends, but there is definitely opportunity for that moving forward. I was able to predict most of the twists early on, but I do think they were quite enjoyable. I didn’t really care for the characters and I do feel like the story itself got repetitive at times. I didn’t know what a kata was or what kendo was or what that gi outfits looks like and it was apparent that the author didn’t know either. Because all I got out of the martial arts class were things like Spirit heard the clonk of the Bokuto—the wooden kendo practice sword—against the Shinai. Bokuto were solid wood and were only supposed to be used to practice kata—not to hit anything—but Mr. Wallis didn’t seem to care. My hope is The Originals will stay on and that I can bring some of these characters over there," Plec says of the Vampire Diaries spinoff. But if that doesn't work out, there's another option. "I could see our universes coming together in five years, 10 years, when people miss the shows," she says. "There's still stories to be told for The Originals that our characters here very smoothly and seamlessly fit into, so if we don't get to do that while The Originals is still on the air, I think that one day, if somebody wanted it badly enough, it could exist." Angie was an Air Mage, and not above using her Gift to raise a wind that would scatter your schoolwork all over your room—or out a window—or make a door slam on your hand. Dylan Williams would grab your pencil or your calculator out of your hands in class.

Even when you learn about the magic, it is a modern world these kids live in. The mythology in this first book creeps in slowly, which makes it all the more appropriate to the story. Like the kids, the readers slowly learn that this threat is much older than anyone can imagine.

Success!

She’d been too stunned on the plane to think of this, and afterward there’d been too many new things to take in. So either Mom or Dad—or both—were here. But that would mean they were magicians… This book has the suspense, the characters, the plot structure, and that great dark academia vibe we’re all going ga-ga for right now. Sadly, what it doesn’t have is charisma or any ability to hold my interest. I saw the bones of a great book, but the book itself was boring enough to me that I had to keep asking people in the house to stop bothering me because I kept looking for excuses to put the book down and be diverted into something more interesting. I love the way Goodman was able to put us in the space of an elite high school and how status and who you know is everything. I like the way she broke the story up between the present (at the crime scene) and leading up to the Ball. We could speculate who was the victim and who caused the death and naturally I was wrong as always. These high schoolers in this book felt so much more wiser beyond their years. I know I definitely wasn't has poised and smart as these kids are. Spirit White loses her entire hippie family in a car crash and is sent to live at Oakhurst Academy, where she learns she's a Legacy, a magician. Everyone at Oakhurst has one or more magic gifts that fall into one or more of the four schools of magic, based on the four elements - fire, water, earth and air. Poor Spirit can't seem to figure out what her power is, though-- While the plotline moved fast and kept up a great pace for such a short book, I wish there had been a little more depth behind some of the actions and events that happened. It felt like the story was reaching for that but couldn't quite make it there, though on multiple levels it was still really fun to read all the twists happening, many that I admit I did not predict. Other than that, I wish there had been a bit more description of the setting to make it really feel set in New York, because it felt here that it could have just been in any big city, but it wasn't enough for me to not enjoy the story. I did also really enjoy how we got snippets of "after the murder" because it really helped build the suspense for it.

This was the very beginning and she was already mentioning supernatural forces. I know it was sarcastic, but she shouldn’t have been guessing anything too close to the mark. A normal person wouldn’t have even guessed something like that, and it clued us in to the fact that they were going to be something supernatural. Scoring an invitation for membership to the exclusive Legacy Club in New York City is more than an honor. It gives you a lifetime of access to power and wealth beyond any prep school doors. That is, after you make it through a rigorous week of events and the extravagant gala, the Legacy Ball. The teachers at Oakhurst are not only negligent, they are downright cruel. The students don't trust them at all. There is no authority figure, not even the older students, who Spirit and her friends can turn to. I think that was intended to make the characters rely only on themselves, but honestly it made the story kind of dull. There was a lot of talk about needing to go and do more research, and a lot of moments where they are meeting in the library. Not exactly fascinating stuff. And every time they met in the library it seemed like we got more detail about what the library actually looked like. Which was completely unnecessary. To start off it wasn’t very well written. Ex. She tried to move her arms, but she couldn’t, then tried to open her eyes, but she couldn’t do that, either. Her head really hurt. More every second. And now it hurt to breathe, too. So it’s not surprising when Excelsior Prep seniors Bernie Kaplan, Isobel Rothcroft, and Skyler Hawkins are nominated as Legacies; their family pedigrees have assured their membership since birth—even if they’re all keeping secrets that could destroy their reputations. But scholarship kid from Queens Tori Tasso? She’s a surprise nominee, someone no one saw coming. Tori’s never fit in this world of designer bags, penthouse apartments, and million-dollar donations. So what did she do to secure her place? Is there any possibility we will see any of the Vampire Diaries characters living on through The Originals once the show is over? [9] The timeline of Legacies begins two years after the events of The Originals and approximately 14 years after The Vampire Diaries. This allows for the incorporation of familiar faces from both shows, while also introducing a new cast of characters that form the core of the series. Throughout its run, Legacies continues to explore the rich history and lore of its predecessors, as well as developing its own distinct storylines and challenges for its characters to overcome. The True Story Behind Legacies: Inspiration and Origins Penny Cox was part of the writing team for The Vampire Diaries and wrote two episodes during Season 7 and Season 8.
