Upgraded single lens mode allows shooting in 170 degree 4K at 30fps without framing and instant share to social media. The X3 has given Insta360 a new 1/2-inch sensor that has a higher resolution than its predecessor. This promises better detail reproduction. In 360-degree photo mode, the camera now has 11968 x 5984 pixels, i.e. a total of 72 megapixels. In 360-degree video mode, the maximum resolution is 5.7K (5760 x 2880) at 30 frames per second. Alternatively, you can record with a lens as with classic action cams. Then the camera films in 4K at 30 fps. Don’t expect a huge leap forward in underlying quality, though. I took a close look at the same clips shot side by side on the two cameras, in 5.7K 360 mode at 30fps, and couldn’t decide on which I liked more. There’s certainly not a night and day difference, in good light or poor, although I did spot slightly lower levels of chromatic aberration on the X3 clips. Devices that do not meet the above requirements may still be able to use the app to control the camera, however, performance of some processor-intensive and AI-powered features may be sub-optimal.However, if you’re looking to buy your first 360-degree action camera, the Insta360 X3 is certainly the camera you want to buy.
