About this deal

It must be noted here that although a DIY enthusiast, or even a carpenter is allowed to fit a gas hob into a worktop or base unit, they are not allowed to connect it to the gas. Please see our project on gas safety and DIY installations. I'm actually a fully trained and fully qualified electrician, with a degree in electronics and a good standing in mechanical design and fitting. I may not have an acs or corgi cert but I do understand rules and regs which is why the job is now done to the correct corgi standard and spec. Tested and all! There is a hot zone immediately above the cooker or hob where there should be nothing fixed, including extractor hood, for 760mm. Either side there is a zone of 150mm where there should be nothing fixed up to a height of 460mm. Extending to the rear, if fitted into a worktop you should leave 50mm. Just to wind up the corgi boys even more, I did move my boiler as well 2 feet to the left of where it was and it works a treat, I have installed a combined gas leak/ CO detector just to make sure and it looks like I have done the job right. For a gas hob you will need a gas supply – obviously! This must not be more than 1.5m away from the intended location of the appliance.

Essentially this is all common sense; you want it away from any draughts that might blow out the flame leaving gas flowing into your kitchen.A gas hob is cut into a worktop and sits over a kitchen base unit like the one in the image above. Before it is cut you need to measure the hob itself, or use the manufacturers fitting instructions and/or template to make sure you know the exact opening size to cut. So as you can see I just need to know that the methods I have been given for the install are correct before I proceed. My intention overall once the work is done is to have the whole install inspected by a Corgi registered guy and get him to certify the install. Firstly to put my wifes mind at rest and secondly to ensure the install complys with the current standards. Hot Zones: When installing your cooker or hob, take note of the hot zone on top of and on either side of the appliance. Make sure that there is nothing fixed for 760mm above it, including the extractor hood. On both sides, the hot zone is at 150mm where nothing is placed up to a height of 460mm. Once you have your hot zone laid out, there should be no plugs, kitchen units or wares placed here that could burn or melt.

Natural gas comes from a gas main that is connected to the cooker or stove. When you turn the control knob on, the valve regulator opens and gas flows through the jets of the burners. And once the cooker ignition is pressed, a circuit or batter produces a spark that ignites the gas. A hob burner is merely a part of an entire cooker. Let’s examine its parts. I understand the Corgi's engineers concerns but being so dismissive of someones capability because they asked what appears to be a simple question isn't a indication of the more complex issues with gas installation already researched by paddyalan and that with was simply the final answer to that research of the overall job !!!.

Gas Meter Fittings & Brackets

According to the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, you must be competent before working on a gas appliance. Regulation 3 (3) it states that anyone who is rewarded for gas work (whether fitting or otherwise) should be registered with Gas Safe. While a lot of DIYers debate the meaning of “competence” under the regulation, we believe that you must have the knowledge and experience to fit gas appliances before installing your own. There are different exams, as well, that cover domestic, commercial, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and other gas fitting skills.

A gas hob is an essential part of any kitchen. If you are planning a kitchen makeover or need to install a new one, understanding how to fit a gas hob correctly is crucial to ensure you are not left dealing with potentially harmful gas leaks. Although fitting a gas hob yourself might seem fairly daunting, you can ensure perfect results if you follow a few simple steps. Most retailers are careful to provide lots of information so that you get the right size hob for the space you have in your kitchen. Fitting a Gas Hob YourselfI know of the loop holes in the gas fitting law and unfortunately until these loopholes are fixed there are going to be a lot of people doing there own gas fitting, whether compitent or not. I will be making it my responsability to make sure that people do electrical diy projects safely by telling people how to do the job safely and making them understand why the job is done that way. Surely it would make more sense for a good corgi registered plumber to give there opinions on how to do plumbing jobs safely to make sure it is done right, its not as if its gonna do you out of any work and at least you have the satisfaction of knowing that you have given correct guidence to an individual who without your help may have done the job anyway and inadvertently killed somone in the process. Its not enough these days to say "you shouldn't do it if your not corgi registered". They might decide to do it anyway and do it wrong and be living next door to you!

Drill a 25mm hole inside the cut out area (more than one can be drilled if it makes life easier for you) and use a jig saw to cut out the hole required for the hob. There are some simple guidelines to follow when it comes to where you shouldn’t place your gas hob:There is no official standard size hob, and the number of rings can vary from 2 to 5 typically with will further affect the overall size of the hob. I'm not saying that I am more, or less competent than a Corgi gas fitter but I have researched and followed the specs laid down by Corgi regarding installation and test. I would not have undertaken the job did I not feel I was capable of completing the job, safely and to spec. Having measured the hob the correct cut out size must be transferred to the worktop. Mark this with a pencil then use some masking tape to form a clear edge to cut to.
