The cards themselves are pretty great. They’re cleanly designed, uncluttered, despite being loaded with text, and feature fantastic artwork with only a few exceptions - yes, I’m looking at you, Newly-Made Lord. The rules, although dense and plentiful, are admirably well-written and very clearly laid out. Samuel Rowlands, A Merry Meeting, or ‘Tis Merry When Knaves Meet (London, 1600). No copy of the first edition is known to exist, but a second edition was republished as The Knave of Clubbes (1609), with further reprints as: The Knave of Harts (London, 1612); The Knave of Harts: Haile Fellow, Well Met (London, 1613), reprinted in 1615; and More Knaves Yet? The Knaves of Spades and Diamonds (London, 1613). 21 Tellingly, Horenbout’s portrait in Sudeley Castle of Henry’s third wife, Jane Seymour, was painted on a Three of Hearts. 29 Similarly, if you’re the type of person who has too many games to get to the table and not enough time to keep returning to the same one over and over again, you’re probably not going to get the most out of the experience this game offers. John Northbrooke, Spiritus Est Vicarius Christi in Terra: The Poore Mans Garden (London: W. Williamson, 1573). 14The game's first base set - Westeros Edition - won the 2002 Origins Award for Best Trading Card Game of 2002. [26] The second base set - Ice and Fire Edition - followed next year and won the 2003 Origins Award for Best Card Game Expansion or Supplement of 2003. Burlington Magazine 129: 366–371.

I am following the most recent interpretation of the sitter’s identity, though this could still be questioned, cf. Bayerisches Jahrbuch für Volkskunde: 27–39, 283–284. Attachment cards represent various weapons, items, conditions and so on, which can be played onto characters. Some are used positively, to protect or buff your own characters, while others can be used negatively, to nerf or neutralise your opponent's. Constant Abilities are game effects written on cards in play that have an ongoing effect on the game state. Location cards also provide abilities and effects, but tend to have slightly more permanence in the game once played - unlike characters, which suffer many more ways of being killed or discarded, and attachments, which are equally susceptible to leaving play. Earliest English playing cards are very scarce. Few specimens have survived and little is known about the manufacturers; the best known are those of Hewson of the seventeenth century (circa 1675). The cards exhibit that geometric construction which characterises the English pattern and which has survived to the contemporary double-ended cards used today. Cf. Catherine Perry Hargrave, A History of Playing Cards and a Bibliography of Cards and Gaming (New York: Dover, 1960), 180. 10

Each house represents one of the main factions involved in the struggle for the Iron Throne emulated by the AGoT LCG. Each house provides different strengths and weaknesses, allowing for various play styles to interact within the same game. Certain cards are restricted to one or two houses, giving each house a unique flavor. Currently, there are eight playable factions in the AGoT LCG. Each is identified by a shield bearing the arms of the house, located in the upper right corner of the card. Benham, Playing Cards, 26: “Even at Christmas time they must only play such games in their masters’ houses or in their masters’ presence. The main purpose of the Statute was to concentrate men’s energies on archery, but there was a long preamble about the dire results of gambling and its devastating effects on morals and religion and domestic happiness.
