About this deal

The oil was developed to have a great affinity for hot internal engine surfaces and provides excellent load capabilities,” its suppliers said –“something of high importance for racing engines running at sustained peak revolutions”. Williams added: “I recently went to watch two-stroke motorcycle racing at Silverstone in England. They were using the product and I knew the smell from years of being in the business. The technical guys said Castrol R is now branded as Castrol 4T Racing Oil SAE 40.” In Australia, Castrol has a long history with the Supercars category, and between 1993 and 2005, Castrol was the title sponsor of Perkins Engineering. It also sponsored Longhurst Racing between 1995 and 1999, Ford Performance Racing between 2007 and 2009, and Paul Morris Motorsport in 2010. [14] In conjunction with a multi-year series sponsorship, between 2014 - 2016 several race events acquired Castrol naming rights including the Castrol Edge Townsville 500 and the Castrol Gold Coast 600. Castrol R 40 SAE 40 4T Racing Engine Oil is castor oil-based and for motorcycles and classic or racing applications. It has additives to prevent rapid deterioration through oxidation and its ‘oiliness’ is claimed to be superior to that of mineral oils. The story begins in 1899 when, having spent 15 years working for the London office of Vacuum Oil Company of Rochester, NY, later to metamorphose into Mobil, Charles Wakefield resigned his position as general manager and determined to strike out on his own. It was an auspicious time to be doing so. Within four years the Wright Brothers would take tentatively to the air, followed albeit somewhat belatedly by compatriot Samuel Franklin Cody at Famborough in 1908. A year later Louis Bleriot flew the English Channel and, five years after that, storm clouds over Europe would spur a period of unprecedented aircraft development effort. On the ground, progress was scarcely less momentous as the horseless carriage progressed from being a curiosity and plaything into an increasingly practical mechanism, as well as another vehicle of human endeavour and national rivalry. [8]He warned, however, never to mix Castrol R40 with mineral or synthetic oils or to leave the oil for long periods of time if the engine is not being used. Hi guys, now I know this will sound a bit odd to those who do not know the beautiful smell of Castrol R but bare with me. Castrol R was the racing engine oil of choice during the 60s, 70s and into the 80s. Anybody who went to bike races or hot rods will know exactly what I am talking about. If you’re driving a muscle car or a European import, the manufacturer may well specify a full synthetic engine oil. Alternatively if you’re driving an older domestic vehicle, the manufacturer may recommend a mineral oil. However, even though that’s the most economical option, a full synthetic will almost certainly look after your engine better. Knowing the best engine oil to use at every oil change is essential. Drain the oil if you are going to leave it standing for a period and replace when you are ready to roll again.

It’s really good to know I’m not the only one using Castrol R! And really interesting to hear your replies, so I’ll try to answer as many (or perhaps the few) replies to this topic.

Looking for 2-stroke engine oil?

I should say that I bought a 1L bottle of Castrol R40 and have tried adding it into my lawn mower and strimmer and it works a treat!!! I now have a racing smelling lawn mower and strimmer but not a GTV. When it’s time for an oil change, knowing the best engine oil to use is essential. The answer to that question gets more complex every day. The latest engines are getting smaller and more powerful all the time, and manufacturers are specifying complex full synthetic motor oils to cope with higher engine pressures and meet fuel efficiency targets.

In the case of Sir Charles Cheers Wakefield, later Baron Wakefield of Hythe, the sweet smell of success was more than a metaphor. You still catch the scent of the substance that made his company a household name in the early 1900s wherever older racing engines are exercised: that distinctive, heady perfume of Castrol R. Although castor oil, the origin of the smell, was still the purgative bane of many a childhood when C C Wakefield & Co introduced its Castrol range in 1909 (the name being a contraction of castor oil), to high performance engines on the road and in the air it was to become a more welcome part of the diet.If you had an old bike with an ordinary four-stroke engine and someone told you it would run better if you only half filled it with oil you'd think they were nuts. Cutting down on the oil in premix is exactly the same thing and just as foolish. Please call +44 (0) 1885 488 488 between 8.30 and 5.00 (UK time) Monday to Friday to speak to one our sales team.
