About this deal

Once measured for one step, add at least an inch onto this measurement, and times by the number of steps in the staircase. If you are carpeting the landing too, measure this and add on to your stair measurement.

This method only really works if the nosing of each tread is not pronounced so the carpet can fold tightly over it. The depth of the nose (the often-protruding edge of the stairs – if you’re nose does not protrude, then this will be covered by the tread measurement) At the end of the day, it’s really entirely up to you what type of carpet you use to cover your stairs, however, if you are undecided then there are a few rules to work by. The sharp points on the gripper rods should always point towards the walls. These points grip the carpet as it is stretched over them and keeps it tightly in place. Step 4 – Fix Jointing Strip in DoorwaysFor each pair, use a tape measure to measure from the inside of the gripper on the tread down to the gripper fixed to the riser below it and then cut a piece of underlay to size. Once the carpet is laid out, put both feet on the carpet around 0.5m to 1m from the edge and do little forward jumps to help push the carpet towards the edges and flatten it out. Make sure there is excess carpet at every edge. 6. Cut corners and excess The underlay should be then cut to shape to fit the stairs. As you will see this will mean you will end up with pieces of underlay for the treads that are wider at one end than the other. When purchasing carpet for your stairs, it will be much easier for you if you can buy a standard sized runner strip of stair carpet. However, this may not be possible, in which case you will need to cut a strip to the width of your stairs. Buy a hard-wearing carpet that will withstand a lot of foot traffic. Likewise for underlay. See our laying carpet underlay project for information on different types of underlay.

There are 2 different methods of installing carpet on a staircase; the French Cap, Hollywood or cap-and-band as it’s also known and also the waterfall method. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. French Cap or Hollywood Carpet Install Methods Gripper comes with nails pre-installed and is laid about 12mm or half an inch away from the room boundaries, i.e. skirtings etc. The masonry nails in the gripper will usually be tough enough to hammer into floor screed. For curved stairs, such as a spiral staircase, you will simply need to account for the differences in widths at either edge of your runner where one side of the tread is longer than the other – this will require being very careful with adding up your measurements to ensure you get the right length of stair runner! The below is an image of what we are aiming to achieve with each of the steps below and shows where each item should be fixed. Next, lay the gripper round the perimeter of the room. Wherever there will be a carpet edge, there should be gripper.Tapi Top Tip: if you measure the widest part of your stair where the runner will sit and multiply this by the number of stairs (plus that extra 30 cm just in case) you’ll get your curved stair runner length. To secure carpet in the angle between tread and riser, use a carpet bolsterand a hammer to push the carpet into the teeth of the gripper strips.

Despite the numerous advantages of carpeting stairs, as with all things, there is also the obvious downsides to doing so such as the fact it’s just another surface that needs to be kept clean and vacuumed. You should be concentrating on a length of about 600mm from the corner of the room at the moment. Turn the blade round and cut the 600mm along the crease until you have reached the corner. Once removed, wash everything down with Sugar Soap and a damp rag, dry it thoroughly and then vacuum over the surface. Children: Again, adding carpet will help with noise reduction and also it will make otherwise hard surfaces much softer for landings during any slips or fallsOn reaching the curve (it may be at the bottom of the stairs, at the top or there may be a curve at the top and bottom of the stairs) use the carpet bolster and hammer to force the carpet between the gripper strip and the angle where the tread meets the riser. Place the carpet over the first tread and hook it on the teeth of the gripper strip. Pull the carpet over the edge of the tread and push it into the angle of the riser and the next tread.
