Unquestionably the world’s most valuable motorcycle, the Captain America chopper has been plagued by a series of cruel mishaps, not just in the film, but seemingly ever since. Larry Marcus is a mechanic who lived with Vaughs at the time, and worked on the choppers and the early film production. "Cliff really came up with the design for both motorcycles," Marcus said in a phone interview. The original opening showing Wyatt and Billy performing in a Los Angeles stunt show (their real jobs). The Captain America bike is quintessentially American, and not just because of the bold American flag motif on the tank, made to stand out by the chrome paintwork on the body. It embodies the rebellious spirit that signaled a cultural shift and inspired a counter-culture movement, and became a symbol of the anti-establishment.

In a nutshell, two collectors (Michael Eisenberg and Gordon Granger) both claimed to own the original bike and Haggerty’s contradictory statements relating to the bikes just served to muddy the waters further.

Hopper’s bike was made much more sedate because he wasn’t as experienced on two wheels. Fonda also took it upon himself to run the bikes in around the streets of Los Angeles to get them looking grubby and well-used before filming began. It may not stand up so well today; Easy Rider was, after all, a movie of its time, but it truly tapped into a nerve in the summer of ’69 and celebrated a new form of freedom that caught the imagination of millions and changed the face of biking forever. Captain America The bike was even issued with a certificate of authenticity from Haggerty. Since then, the motorcycle has resided in Austin, Texas where it survived a fire in December 2010. Haggerty - famed for his lead role in TV series and movie The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams - was in attendance at the 1996 sale with Graham to confirm that he was the first custodian of the motorbike after filming ended.
