Interview with Joss Whedon by SF Said." Shebytches.com. Archived from the original on May 12, 2010. Based on the TV show, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series has expanded into licensed comics, novels, and video games. These stories either adapt aired episodes, fill spaces between stories, or offer a continuity to the series, often involving the original cast and crew. In the Region 2 and 4 releases, episodes with commentaries include two English subtitles: the show itself, and the commentary. The Region 1 releases do not offer subtitles for the commentaries. This even applies to the final episode of season five, " The Gift", in which the "previously" scenes are a montage leading into the episode itself. This montage was deleted from "The Gift" on the Region 1 DVDs. This montage was later included as an easter egg on the Season 7 DVD set, even in Region 2 and 4.

As a season this one is much more fully realised than the first and for novice Buffy watchers would probably serve as a better introduction to the series. It is still cited by some as the best season in the show's run and it certainly shows the full range of the regular cast particularly Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz. Stand-out episodes from this season include 'Innocence', 'Passion' and the two part finale 'Becoming'. It is also the season that introduces characters that become key in later seasons such as Spike, Oz and Drusilla. The Region 1 Buffy 40-disc boxed set includes a note from Joss Whedon as well as an extra disc (the 40th) with exclusive special features:The series began on March 10, 1997 and ran for seven years until May 20, 2003. In that time, 144 episodes of the series aired.

Professor Matthew Pateman, head of English and creative arts at Edge Hill University, first caught on to Buffy as a lecturer in his late 20s. He began including it as part of a popular culture class he taught in the early 2000s, then later in 2006 made it a core feature of his "televisual narratives" module. He has subsequently written a book, The Aesthetics of Culture in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, along with a book about Whedon's work. "It felt like a really smart, witty, well put together and incredibly fresh piece of television unlike anything else that I was aware of at the time," Pateman tells BBC Culture. Sure, it was mostly set in a high school but compared to the in-some-ways equivalent Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, it took its audience more seriously, with its dark humour and complex characterisation. "It felt like it was saying, 'we think you are interesting, grown-up people who want to be interested in interesting grown-up things,'" says Pateman. Love film and TV? Buffy the Vampire Slayer is in serialized format, with each episode involving a self-contained story while contributing to a larger storyline, broken down into season-long narratives marked by the rise and defeat of a powerful antagonist, commonly referred to as the Big Bad. While the show is mainly a drama with frequent comic relief, most episodes are a blend of different genres, including horror, martial arts, romance, melodrama, farce, science fiction, comedy, and even, in one episode, musical comedy. The Complete Fourth Season on DVD; " Buffy Inside the Music." Now remember this is 2017, people are used to 1080p streaming, Blu-ray / 4K video, and HDMA sound quality, 480i, 2 channel sound and 1.33:1 screen ratio are simply not going to cut it anymore. However, in this case, despite the huge technical disadvantages, Buffy still stands out as a serious and entertaining show, one of the best of its kind. The screen-play are well written, characters well developed, dialogues are actually interesting and thought provoking, plus great acting all around. Joss Whedon is a real genius. Two other single-disc Region 2 DVDs have been released. The first is titled "The Very Best of...". It contains these four episodes: "Becoming, Part One", "Graduation Day, Part Two", "Hush", and "The Gift". The second contains the episode " Once More, with Feeling" and a number of special features including a featurette on season 1 of Angel and a featurette titled " Buffy, Inside the Music".Buffy the Vampire Slayer first aired on March 10, 1997 as a mid season replacement for the show Savannah on The WB network, and played a key role in the growth of the Warner Bros. television network in its early years.
