Torque - Measured in Newton Metres (Nm), torque is the tightening force. Most electric screwdrivers have a torque of between 3 to 5 Nm, with some drill drivers having torque values of 30 Nm or even higher. A higher torque will make the screwdriver easier to use and allows you to drive screws into even the hardest of surfaces. This isn’t a heavy-duty tool, but it still delivers 5 Nm of torque and a nippy 360 rpm. It’s got more than enough power to drive all sorts of screws around the house or garden. But you’re not buying this to replace a full-size driver anyway. It’s the right size to keep in a kitchen drawer for when you need it.First off, this is one of the best electric screwdriver kits out there because it includes an offset and right-angle adapter. They’re not things we’d normally splash out on, but when you need to get at that screw, nothing else will get the job done. You’ll be grateful they included it, trust us. The rubberised grip is pleasant to hold and the weight of the drill sits over the wrist for a more comfortable operation, but at 1kg it isn’t featherweight, so if you struggle with grip, this might not be for you. But if you’re a competent DIYer and have all the drill bits already – you get nothing in the case here – it should serve you well, and get the job done in no time at all. Some of the best electric screwdrivers come with both a straight grip and a pistol grip for maximum comfort and ease of use.

For improved performance look for a variable speed control function and the number of torque settings that the cordless screwdriver provides. Spare battery - Found on more expensive models, a spare battery is a good idea if you have large jobs to do, and don’t want to wait for two hours while the battery recharges. What's a torque selector on an electric screwdriver? Unlike some of the articulated electric drivers on my list, this is a purely straight screwdriver that’s suited to getting into tight spaces. There’s plenty of rubberised plastic on the handle which makes it grippy, and a battery charge indicator just behind it. You can also press the soft-touch button to cycle through three different torque settings. Attachments - If you’re new to the DIY game, look for an electric screwdriver with enough bits to get you started. A mix of allen, Philips, cross head and hex bits will get most jobs done. Regular Updates: Our recommendations stay current with any changes in product performance or availability. If you’re looking to get some serious work done, the Makita DF001DW has you covered. It can switch between pistol-grip and standard barrel screwdriver modes for different situations, and it feels extremely robust in the hand. Even the micro-USB port in the handle has a cover. A two-way switch at the top of the handle drives screws in or out at a single speed. However, the WX240 really comes into its own if you’re working in cramped spaces, or doing fiddly jobs where a larger cordless driver with more of a pistol grip might get in the way. I used both the WX240 and the Bosch IXO to assemble a PC inside a new case, and while the Bosch was fine for removing external case screws, the Worx was a lot more usable inside the case and for getting screws into the motherboard. It charges in under 90 minutes over a USB-C cable, and will happily last for around 35 to 45 minutes of work. For bigger screws on DIY jobs, you might want something with a little more power and torque; but if you need something that feels and works more like a manual screwdriver, this is the one to buy.

Some electric screwdrivers have a ring which you can turn to adjust the torque (aka, the turning power). This is useful for screwing into different materials. Delicate surfaces, like plasterboard, for example, would require a lower torque number to avoid over-tightening. Something like solid wood, however, would require a higher number, to help ensure there's enough power to get the job done. What's a precision electric screwdriver? Voltage - Most electric screwdrivers have a voltage of 3.6V, but RPM speeds can vary. More powerful drill drivers can have 12V or 18V and significantly more torque. This rechargeable screwdriver is more versatile than its competitors. There are 6 settings for torque control (5 forward and 1 reverse) and variable speed control. It’s controlled by how tightly you squeeze the trigger. So, you can exert a greater level of control over your job and, crucially, avoid over-tightening or damaging screw heads. Not all lithium-ion batteries are alike: some will hold a charge better than others, while some will also charge faster, within two or three hours. AccessoriesIndependent: We will tell you exactly what we think of a product and we would never recommend anything we wouldn't use ourselves. It’s important to note that, unlike a cordless drill, an electric screwdriver is only suitable for lightweight screws into pre-tapped holes. This is because it doesn’t have the speed or power that’s required to drill holes when compared to a cordless (or corded) drill. However, electric screwdrivers do allow you to work at greater efficiency and they are very versatile tools.

The IXO’s plentiful power is contained within a very compact footprint. This rechargeable screwdriver is also extremely light, weighing just over 600 grams. This factor, the soft-grip handle and the overall ergonomic design make it extremely comfortable to use. An integrated task light comes in useful when working in dark corners such as under work surfaces. Comprehensive Research: Our team dedicates extensive time and effort to research and analyze products, so you can make informed decisions. LED lights - A hand extra to have, especially as assembling cupboards and wardrobes involves getting into lots of tight dark corners. Some also have built-in flashlights. Now on its seventh generation, the IXO is arguably the most popular electric screwdriver on the planet. The latest design however has been given a power boost with 20 per cent more grunt than V6 and a not-too-shabby torque of 5.5Nm. This all adds up to a pretty competent screwdriver for everyday household tasks, and one that can manage 190 screws from a single charge.Electric screwdrivers fall into three camps – pistol grip screwdrivers that give you more stability and grip, straight-handled screwdrivers that can fit into the tightest spaces, and those that convert from a straight handle to a pistol grip to give you the best of both worlds. Getting the Most out of your Electric Screwdriver As with most drill-drivers, the battery is a separate unit that slides onto the bottom of the handle. It’s charged by its own charger and can take up to six hours to charge. This and the sheer size means it’s not as convenient a tool for basic household DIY, but it’s a brilliant and affordable option when you have something more ambitious in mind. With the larger drill/driver models, you will usually need to remove the battery and slot it into a separate charger. That said, even some of these are now charging through micro-USB. Electric screwdrivers are as easy to use as manual screwdrivers, but there are a few things you can do to make your life even easier. Drilling a pilot hole is essential when you’re working with hard or brittle materials, it makes screws easier to drive and helps to avoid splitting the workpiece.
