The Marshal is also super detailed with so much going on, but again, not so much you can’t show off your skills. Final Thoughts

We’ll be basing a lot of the pricing and value for this box off the most recent Beast Snagga box, so we have a pretty good idea of how much most things inside will cost when the hit the shelves individually. Obviously, though, these are not set in stone yet and we’ll update this post with the actual pricing and savings when they become official. Stratagems: There’s some real hot stuff here, with a modified (but still strong) version of Devout Push joined by some new friends.

The two defensive options and the Holy Orb are all bargains that should be in the conversation for the vast majority of Templar lists that get built, and the other options here certainly aren’t bad, making this section a smash hit. Litanies of the Devout Engage an enemy that came and contested your objective but did not engage you – with the 3” pile in and within 1” Engagement Range you effectively have a 3.99” heroic intervention

Primaris Crusader squad - The Crusader Squad is a mix of Neophytes and Initiates led by a Sword Brother. They have access to a mix of weapons, including the Pyre Pistol and Pyreblaster, short-range D6 weapons that automatically hit their targets. Outfit any Adeptus Astartes squad with custom pauldrons, cover your Assault Intercessors with honorific ribbons, and equip a Repulsor with a multi-melta – a weapon that the Templars favour for its ferocity. Yeah so first up I’m going to echo what Liam said – this book absolutely rules and is everything a Marine Supplement should be. Templars players have had to be patient, but the wait was worth it – this supplement joins Sisters, Thousand Sons and Death Guard as a fantastic example of 9th Edition design trends done right. There’s power, cool unique stuff that no one else gets, and a bunch of things that are clearly powerful but with enough constraints on them that you have to think about how to build them into lists. I do suspect that lists using Uphold the Honour of the Emperor are going to stand out, but there are other things you can do here, and real tradeoffs between the various decisions you have to make. Black Templars Army Set contents

I am constantly – albeit slowly – working on the army. The next step in my neverending painting challenge will be the stunning new models of Helbrecht and Grimaldus, but I also plan to convert some human-sized allies in the form of an Inquisitor and some acolytes, inspired by the figures present on that classic cover. There’s been heated discussion among fans as to whether this brand new Castellan is, in fact, a Primaris Space Marine (wearing unorthodox power armour that closely resembles older patterns) or whether he is not Primaris at all, but rather GW’s first newly released Firstborn Space Marine inquite a while. The inclusion of the brand new codex, with alternate art, a month before its main release, is an extra selling point – though one that continues to draw ire from large portions of the 40k community who feel they shouldn’t be forced to buy a high-cost box set just to get the rulebook.

Divine Protection and Fires of Devotion are unchanged (which is great news, as they were heavily used), but the other three have all undergone significant revision. Possibly the coolest is Oath of Glory, which is now a self-buff similar to the Mantra of Strength from the base Codex, granting the Chaplain +1 Strength, fights first, and the ability to score 2 additional hits for every 6 to hit in melee. If your goal for your Chaplain is to get him in and start breaking heads, this will give him a big leg up in doing that (though that does mean you can no longer hand out Fight First to other units from these, so make sure to bring a Holy Orb for a critical turn). Jumping onto an objective you couldn’t reach in the Movement phase (maybe you didn’t roll high enough when Advancing)

The Black Templars 40k Army Box Release Has Flopped…

Helbrecht: Primaris Helbrecht is hilariously over the top, instantly one of the deadliest killers in the 41st millenium – as it should be. Vow of Retribution (Aura). Subtract 2 from the Ld of enemy models in enemy units within 6” of this model. A -2 modifier is a pretty solid effect, and you can bump that up to a nasty -3 with the Fear Made Manifest Warlord trait plus give enemy units within 6″ -1 to their Combat Attrition tests. The Combat Attrition modifier is whatever, since Marines are largely immune to those modifiers, but throwing out -3 to leadership tests can really start to make things difficult for an opponent, where even units with a relatively high Ld can suddenly find themselves losing additional models after only suffering 1-2 casualties. It’s large enough to be relevant, but the effect isn’t powerful enough to build around. Still, more interesting than it used to be. C+ The Emperor’s Champion sprue looks a lot smaller than the Marshal’s as there really aren’t any options for this iconic character. He just chains his sword to his wrists and goes purging. Overall these went together pretty easily. They have so many posing options, are really dynamic, and you can’t complain about the detail at all!

At the start of the Fight phase, if your warlord is within Engagement range of an enemy unit, they fight first that phase. More helpful in 9th edition, and nasty when combined with a Heroic Intervention. C+ Sword Brethren are an odd unit. They’re melee Primaris veterans and have some astoundingly cool models, but that comes at a terrible price – they’ve been bitten by the curse of the model-linked equipment options. As a result, you have to take a weird hodge-podge of melee weapons if you’re buying fancy toys for them, making them hard to specialise, and the price point they end up sitting in is awkwardly between Assault Intercessors and the vastly more lethal Bladeguard, and they risk being not reliably enough better than the former and not cheaper enough than the latter. The ubiquitous Bike Chaplain and Chief Apothecary help keep the list swinging at optimal efficiency. The Skull of the Cacodominus has seen a bigger update, and is vastly better at its job of ruining Psykers’ days as a result. This now has a static effect of giving Psykers within 12” -1 to cast and perils on any double, and once per game in the opponent’s psychic phase you can reveal it to give an additional -1 within 18”. Wide-ranging -2 to cast is a massive headache for Grey Knights and even starts to give Thousand Sons some pause, so if those books are terrorising your metagame, this is for you. Plus from the looks of this, there are two close combat weapon options, an ax, and sword, plus a combi-flamer option to go along with the plasma pistol. Something to note here, the Beast Snagga box had new 26 models inside, while the BT box will come with 13 miniatures, 12 of which are new releases. The Emperor’s Champion is super dope with enough open space where you can really let your painting skill show through.
