On a holiday r/t NY-DC it offered distraction from the miserable countryside flying past Amtrak windows. Jefferson Farjeon novel I could find in the Kindle format: Mystery in White, first published the following year.

Imagine my delight when I received two British Classic Christmas Crime Mysteries from across the seas from a Tracey in the UK.But visibility is almost nil, and after a challenging journey on foot through deep snow, they find themselves outside a welcoming-looking country house whose front door turns out to be open.

The prose was pretty good and it was nicely atmospheric, but I never got completely engaged with the plot or the characters, so my first Farjeon was just an okay-ish read for me.

THE first thing David did on emerging from the front door was to pitch head first into a mound of snow.

He is such an insufferable example of the trope that all of his carriage-mates are willing to face a snow storm just to get away from him. Les fans d'Agatha Christie ou des 'whodunnits' / 'mysteries' de cette grande époque apprécieront à coup sûr 'Mystery in White'.But that is the least of their problems when they are joined by others from the train and find out that there has been a murder on the train and maybe a murder in the house. Farjeon also reveals in his opening chapters his skill in slowly adding sinister elements to the plot; a frightened face, one set of footprints too many etc. The whole set up is quite wildly improbable and the amateur detective (a psychic expert) is perhaps a little too insightful, but all the disparate people and elements of the plot make for a darn good story. I’m glad that you were able to go back and take another look at this as I was curious to see what you made of it.
