About this deal

It just gives off a sense of nostalgia for me which meant I had to start re-reading almost immediately. Inside, the book includes thirty-two of Tolkien’s illustrations and maps, along with the pages of the Book of Mazarbul (from the Dwarves’ ill-fated attempt to retake Moria), whose pages Tolkien had created to include in the initial editions, but were nixed by the publisher due to the high cost of the recreation in publication. The first adventure in the Folio Society editions of ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ series, Enid Blyton’s The Enchanted Wood features Jonathan Burton’s enchanting illustrations and a new introduction by Michael Morpurgo. Set in the richly crafted world of Middle-earth, it weaves a tale of heroism, friendship, and the battle between good and evil. It was luckily released the day before payday so I instantly bought it and waited by the door for a week for it to be delivered.

Tolkien’s treatment of the eternal struggle between good and evil, from stirring battles (‘as good as anything in Homer’, according to C. Those illustrations have been superseded in both art and aggression, almost since the first moment Lord of the Rings caught the public imagination. The off-white dust jacket might pick up finger-smudges, those Elvish letters on the inner edge may blur, and that die-cut of Sauron’s eye may fold or tear - the fate of all printed books, but such little affronts feel unbearable to so lovely a spectacle. The Folio edition of The Buried Giant is illustrated by Jana Heidersdorf and introduced by Daniel Kehlmann. For the first time ever, a very special edition of the classic masterpiece, with the complete text and illustrated throughout by the author himself.I like this in comparison to the front of The Hobbit as it’s almost a close to the start from the Shire. As much a celebration of Lee’s art as it is of Tolkien’s legacy, Folio’s The Lord of the Rings is the ultimate edition for any collector.

In 2001, Peter Jackson’s film adaptation helped to introduce the epic to an even wider audience, and Alan Lee was the natural choice for a lead concept artist winning him the 2004 Academy Award for Art Direction. Given the length of the book, paper heavy enough to eliminate show-through completely would make for a more cumbersome volume. R. Tolkien (1892–1973) was a distinguished academic, though he is best known for writing The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, plus other stories and essays. Books have been my sanctuary, my escape, my salvation, and a dozen other life-changing and life-defining things since I was a teen. I got the set delivered and it was filled with packing paper to protect the box, but to be honest, I feel like I wouldn’t worry about much damage unless it was a sharp object.Well, what can I say… Thirty years later, I “swallowed” the trilogy in about a month – and it took me so long only because I was reading it during a very busy time and could dedicate to it only short moments before bedtime.
