This book managed to shock, delight, and amaze this thriller-lover with every single turn in the plot. Whether you’re hoping to keep the spooky season Halloween vibes going a little bit longer or are ready to dive into a wintry, chilling crime story, this month’s selection of new releases has you covered. Unfortunately, the execution didn’t really work for me – I felt that the plot was a bit all over the place (especially in the second half of the book), the characters were one-dimensional and written in a way that made all of them unlikable (with the exception of the kid William), and too many elements of the story just seemed implausible.

This is a high-tension Gone Girl scenario, except the reader doesn’t have the benefit of knowing the fate of the missing person; we are kept in the dark with the protagonist. I also was kinda sick of the author's habit of ending chapters on these soap opera like cliffhangers. Joe Lynch is in serious danger of going down for a murder he did not commit, a murder he’s not convinced has even happened at all. Thus, Joe sets out to prove that Ben is not only alive, but the mastermind behind a series of events that jeopardize Joe’s reputation and career, including an altered photograph that is posted on Facebook.

On the other hand, there’s absolutely no shame in simply wanting an entertaining and jaw-dropping finale, and if that describes you, you’re likely to find the LIES conclusion quite entertaining indeed—it certainly fulfills the shock value requirement and then some. There seems to be increasing pressure on psychological thrillers to deliver that jaw-dropping, never-saw-it-coming twist… but what happens when that twist is impossible to predict because it’s disconnected from the rest of the story? Joe soon discovers that the barb of his wife's betrayal is just the beginning of what he's about to face in the following days to come. Crime by the Box will deliver a hand-selected, newly-released hardcover mystery, thriller, or suspense novel right to your door on a monthly basis. He's a high school teacher and is happy with his job and the fact that he's the primary caretaker of his son, due to his wife's more demanding job.

By the time I finished the book I felt there were more positive things about the story than negative. It's not that I didn't like the twists and turns more just the constant use of them to close each chapter started to come across as cheesy rather than fun and jaw dropping.

Lies is an impressive and engrossing first novel, and bodes well for the prospect of more intriguing thrillers to come from Logan. That’s not to say it isn’t without its own value, though, and readers seeking a dramatic binge-read may enjoy it yet. As the evidence piles up against him and seemingly everything that can go wrong does go wrong, he comes to the soul-sucking realization that he cannot trust anyone. He's an English teacher who gets to spend quality time with his son since he started working part-time.
