About this deal

This is children’s historical fiction at its best, a gripping adventure with believable characters and events that have a resonance today. There are echoes of Michael Morpurgo and Nina Bawden, but in a style of her own Carroll (The Girl Who Walked on Air, Strange Star) sews together accessible history with a cracking plot and a character to love in the strong, principled Olive. I am sick and tired of the "mean girl becomes your bestie" trope that plagues contemporary kids' fiction. Let me start by saying that I have adored every book written by Emma Carroll, but this is my new favourite.

Letters from the Lighthouse is an incredibly empathetic story that not only portrays the hardships of life during the war but also poignantly explores the anguishing encounters of refugees looking for safety in new places while carrying with them the heartbreak of leaving a war-torn home behind. I think this books offers a wonderful opportunity for children of my age to see how poorly treated people were in those days and what it was like living during the war. Olive, Sukie and Cliff go to the cinema to brighten up their mood as a few weeks ago they found out that their father had died as a soldier but was very proud to be dying for his country. It seemed extremely realistic, so realistic I thought I was the character Olive and I would recommend it to someone who gets bored quickly because it has a lot of drama in it from the first few pages. Late night meetings behind closed doors, mysterious communications, maps, foreign words and furtive conversations. Remarkables REMARKABLES Intriguing, stunning, or otherwise remarkable books These include fine editions, foreign publications exceptional for their interest or production, special editions and some first-rate books from very small publishers.

Louie is a feisty heroine, loyal to her friends and determined to succeed in this engaging historical adventure. I am reading letters of light house now and i have to be honest so far its amazing the secrets in it blew me and it surprised me at how Queenie is at the moment. It tells the moving story of Olive and her brother Cliff as they leave the heavily bombed streets of London and become evacuees on the coast of Devon, sent to live with an enigmatic lighthouse keeper.Olive’s mother decides that the city is no longer safe for her children so Olive and her younger brother, Cliff, are evacuated to coastal Devon. I haven't charted out my visits for the summer term, but I'm sure there are several in the south) and thanks so much for being so fantastic! There is an evidence base which shows a strong correlation between literacy levels and health outcomes.
