I'm usually okay with that, especially in a first in series book when characters and setting have to be established. Clementine is more talkative with a hint of rudeness, an unorganized person, and a person who has ”You only live once” motto on her forehead.

Their calm life is shattered when their kitchen manager is found dead in the school's walk-in freezer. On the one hand, I liked the premise and I also liked that it was set among the dinner ladies, cleaners and other support staff at the school.My main problem in this one was that there were so many unlikeable characters-- one of whom was Clementine, who is the partner of Margery.

This is, in my humble opinion, a very successful debut and definitely a series that I am looking forward to keeping up with. The characters are beautifully written and I came to love them within the first few pages and was rooting for them all the way to the end. Because Clementine seems odd about the death, she pestered Margaery in a cute and hilarious way to find out the truth. The book is also unmistakably British, with copious references to school dinners, Quality Street, supermarket chains, and small towns where everyone knows each other’s business. The plot is great, the character cast is spot on, and the dialogue and humor is so quick, smart, and addictive .Side note: I don’t like to compare books but I have to say that I enjoyed TDLD more than The Thursday Murder Club. Finally, the mystery isn't even worth getting into at this point because, truly, at halfway through the book I'm not sure the author or their creations care. The kitchen manager was talked about as if she was a really fun person who liked to play funny pranks on people but most of the 'pranks' were mean and horrible and not at all funny.
