Description

Having read a number of fiction books about Afghanistan (A Thousand Splendid Suns being my favourite) I was keen to read this book following five women in Kabul. While I didn't learn anything new about Afghanistan or feel any cultural vibes from the pages it was an OK read, cute, hopeful.

It's worth checking out the authors Wikipedia page to understand how she came to be in Afghanistan and the controversy her books caused, she does however acknowledge this in the authors note in this book. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. As one of the directors of Oasis Beauty School, she works closely with Afghan refugees, imparting practical skills in the challenging environments they face.CANDACE, a wealthy American who has finally left her husband for her Afghan lover, the enigmatic Wakil. I actually can't believe I purchased this book, after seeing it be compared to books by Khaled Hosseini. I cannot reconcile my personal reactions to the dreadful horrors of being a female in Afghanistan and the author's 'Pollyanna' view of ordinary Afghan life (despite an on-going war, episodic as it appears to be).

The title, cover and description just scream chick-lit, a genre which I’m not very fond of, but I thought the setting was interesting because I like reading about Afghanistan, which is what made me decide to pick it up. Read this if you like stories about how love changes people and be grateful for where you are, especially the X chromosome. She aims to rescue the women of Afghanistan that are being thrown in prison for crimes such as denying men sex or looking at the wrong man in the wrong way. If this doesn’t open your eyes and make you more conscious of what these people have gone through, then I don’t know what else will. It's evident the author has first hand knowledge of what it was like, particularly for women, to live in Kabul at the beginning of the Taliban resurgence.

We mainly use Royal Mail Tracked 48 Service for goods which weight less then 2kg, all other goods will be delivered by a Courier. I have read other books about Afghanistan, written by literary men, but this one is not an intellectual, meta-fictional product.
