About this deal

David Harwood moves back with his parents after the death of his wife and career with his son Ethan. This is the perfect excuse to start taking a closer look at the everyday folk that you nod to when passing on the street. If that isn't crazy enough, there is a nutso on the loose either raping women, leaving dead squirrels tied up to trees, or mannequins on rides at a bankrupt amusement park. When the baby’s real mother is found murdered, David can’t help wanting to piece together what happened—even if it means proving his own cousin’s guilt.

He does not want to panic his cousin, and when she is getting dressed, David sees a flyer in the stroller with an address.

Marla might be a little off kilter since her baby was still born, but David did not believe her capable of murder. m. Aug 4 as part of "Between The Covers," the WXEL Book Club at the WXEL station, Boynton Beach to air Aug. When David Harwood is asked to look in on his cousin Marla, who is still traumatised after losing her baby, he thinks it will be some temporary relief from his dead-end life. Bloody mannequins in car “23” of an abandoned Ferris wheel…a fiery, out-of-control bus with “23” on the back…“23” on the hoodie of a man accused of assault. There is real storytelling craft on display here, and if ever a book deserved the description 'page turner' it's this one.

When the mother of that baby is found murdered, David does all he can to protect Marla despite her sorted past. The main mystery deals with the murder of the mother of an infant son but there is more going on in this little town including incidents at the local amusement park, the local college, and even a case involving squirrels. This was a pleasure for me as I love the writing of Linwood Barclay and eagerly await any new novels by him, having read everything he has released. Half-way through Broken Promise, I still didn't feel that there was a killer hook, but instead Barclay is a whole lot more ingenious and delivers an utterly fascinating take on the humdrum life and goings on in the area, placing irons in fires and keeping them smoking, but without the blue touch paper really setting them alight. They are not all solved at the end of this book, in fact, there are more unanswered questions, but it works and I can't wait to get to the next book. There were several twists and turns along the way, although I had pretty much figured some of them out before they happened. David is on his way to visits his cousin that lost her daughter a couple of months before at childbirth. What’s even more impressive is that every single story moves forward simultaneously in real-time and the inevitable cliff-hangers as Barclay moves the reader from one perspective to another are never interminable or irritating. I particularly enjoyed ex-newspaper reporter David Harwood, police detective Barry Duckworth, and medical examiner Wanda Therrieult. Little does he know running this simple errand will land him in the middle of a murder investigation? Most of the story lines come to a conclusion in a very satisfying way, so this 'could' be a stand-alone. However, the plot kept me reading and I really enjoyed a myriad of characters from Too Close to Home and Never Look Away.
