Never gonna be a literary classic, but getting the inside view of the Deuxmoi juggernaut is a heap of fun! more to come over on my IG, but if you’re a fan of DM and wondering what this book is about—give it a go! Her friends Leon and Victoria are more successful career and family wise and tend to prop up Cricket during her moments of despair. Her boss wonders why she’s disappearing on the job, her friends are increasingly irritated by her dedication to the account, and she has celebrities, investors, and journalists approaching her with bright-eyed interest. Follows Cricket Lopez the assistant of one of the most notorious celebrity stylists that will become famous on Instagram.

Instead, we spend the majority of the book with Cricket being terrible at her job as an assistant and see no actual evidence that she would make a good stylist as she is desperately trying to tell the reader she wants to be. It's just a way to blow off steam after a terrible, terrible day at work where her nightmarish boss screams at her and blames her for some 18-year-old influencer's screw-up.She’s been an assistant for eight years despite her boss Sasha’s nasty comments (like, jaw-droppingly horrible) and her aim is to get a promotion. Having to read about a fictionalized Deuxmoi (but still Deuxmoi) having poorly written and cringe-worthy phone sex with this man and masturbating a couple of times was actually horrible. For nonfans, this autofiction is reminiscent of other of-the-moment bad-boss books like Leigh Stein's Self Care . She's suffered being a terrible woman's assistant for 8 years, and even though she's never allowed to do anything, she refuses to leave her job on the off chance this horrible woman might deign to give Cricket a 'thank you.

I read straight through overnight and was so caught up in the story, I was surprised by a major plot point (that any DM fan should have seen miles away. However, keeping her identity a secret is more important than ever while she leaks celebrity gossip for millions of viewers. For those of you who may not know, Deuxmoi is an anonymous woman who started a celebrity gossip instagram account at the height of the pandemic. The part with the bad boss, totally sympathize with and understand Crickets actions 🎬 , feeling like she can't leave and hoping for better days.

When the account experiences overnight success, she struggles to balance the increasing demands of the account with her work life. This actually mirrors DeuxMoi in interviews that I've read; you'll notice that she is always evading accountability, not taking responsibility for anything harmful or damaging or inaccurate she might have posted, and afraid to be criticised. For deuxmoi fans, this novel will be a solid extension of the brand's coming-of-age story, and they'll especially enjoy the inside jokes and liberal quotes from the real-life account, which helps create the tantalizing-yet-relatable tone. If I can enjoy the fast paced celeb gossip, just imagine what fans of the account will say when reading this book. I've been a pretty avid follower for most of the time the account has been active, and it's really enlightening in terms of how you view celebrity, and the things that people share in their encounters with celebrities (a couple of examples, Leonardo DiCaprio will now forever be "Headphones Dino Bones" to me, and I will always insert "safe sex" into the middle of John Mayer's name).

I’ll admit, I have been a devotee of the Deux Moi account for some time and bought this book merely out of support for my favorite content creator. I've just read more compelling books about stylists, like The Stylist which was also published by William Morrow.

It was fun trying to figure out the real-life allegories some of this stuff must be based on, though. My sister first told me about Deuxmoi fairly early on as she often had juicy celebrity tidbits or gossip that was sourced from this account. The finale of the book when Cricket has a revelation of what to do next kind of felt like product placement (or it’s a coincidence that it aligned at the time).
