About this deal

A Tapping At My Door is a crime thriller, the first in David Jackson’s DS Nathan Cody crime thriller series. Like so many central characters in crime novels, Cody is slightly damaged and has a lot of personal baggage when we first meet him. Although at first glance, you could be mistaken for thinking that this was an all too familiar plot of weirdo on rampage with twisted agenda, versus damaged cop, Jackson adds a certain verve to the whole affair as he sucks us in deeper to the tormented worlds of his protagonists. DS Nathan Cody, just back to work after an undercover mission that went horrifyingly wrong, is put on the case. Cody, now in the Murder Investigation Team, is partnered up with an ex-girlfriend – DC Megan Webley and although there is clearly some issues between them relating to their past history, the chemistry works very well and Webley is more than a match for Cody’s unpredictable nature.

My heart was literally in my mouth and there could have been an explosion in the street outside and I would have been oblivious because nothing mattered more to me at that moment in time than finishing this book. Though due to some oversight, Jackson fails to specify whether the poor guy was just a few days away from his retirement. But he has recently suffered a very traumatic experience, so maybe his erratic behaviour is more than understandable.I had a feeling that the Liverpool accents weren't quite right, but my only reference point is the Beatles. Throughout the book, Jackson takes us on an affectionate but not completely misty-eyed, trip through the familiar streets of his native city, and the city takes a role as a separate character in the book. This explains his shortish temper, particularly with local reporter, suffers with insomnia and has a hint of recklessness about him but again, David Jackson doesn’t overplay these issues, they are there and clearly a concern, not least to Cody himself, but he does work as part of a team and there are minimal lone wolf moments. But then I am convinced the author thoughts, shit, how on earth do I pull this together: why is my killer using birds? I just hope Cody will get a grip soon, and come back to his senses, seeing that he is decided not to resort to psychiatric help.

This is fiction afterall, why can't the detective not have PTSD, have a perfect family life, understanding wife/ GF and completely focus on solving crimes? And that is one of the main reasons that this series will work well-we are made to really care about this fictional policeman! Disturbed by a tapping at her back door, and in a move as stupid as going to the basement in a horror film, Terri Latham goes to investigate finding a raven is responsible for the noise. This was also very well done with its helpful explanation of the difference between the new touristy bits and those slightly rougher parts of town cleverly slipped into the story to give a sense of place and to me this felt distinct from any generic English city. He adopts a female voice for the female characters, so it often sounds like the suspect is being interrogated by Mrs Brown's Liverpudlian sister. He focuses on the people and their stories rather than what they are doing in their minutia of police work. This is no way detracts from the story, because the story is about the killer, about Cody and a couple of other characters, about relationships, about the why.

There is a section related to the secondary plot which was so graphic that I had to skip/skim a good bit to get through it. A Tapping At My Door is a spellbinding and spine chilling read that had me literally on the edge of my seat. I actually cared about his progression throughout the story, he very quickly became somebody that I could see as a real person. I don’t really get to read them as much as I used too when I was in my teens, but crime novels is still one of my favorite genres to read.
